Question Transmission...

Is there a difference in the Transmission's offered for the Rx-7's 1979-1985? What is it exactly? How do I know what type of tranny I have? If your Familiar with recent posts, you'll remember that I am having some problems with I think is getting the right clutch. I thought maybe I am ordering the wrong one, Maybe the tranny on my twelve A is not from an 84 like the car, Just trying to get the right part, seems so confusing.

I believe you mean 79-85. AN I believe that all the tranny were the same Borg and Warner unit, except the GSL SE.

You're limiting your scope of knowledge to 1st gens, rotarys had been out long before them.

The 1st gens had 2 basic trannys. The one for the SAs, which is the same style as found in the older rotarys, then the 81+ tranny. The SA trannys came in both 4 and 5 speeds, all FBs are 5 speeds. The SAs had the shifter position moved forward and had a long shift handle. There are 2 clutch/disc sizes, 215 mm in the older trannys, then the 225 mm one which carried through all NA engines until the end of the 2nd gens. I don't recall off hand what year they went to the 225 mm clutch.

I suggest you read through the FAQs on Racing Beat's website for further info, they cover the subject fairly well. You might post pics, with measurements of what you have, flywheel, clutch and tranny, along with the ID # on the flywheel.

Yeah I know Mazda used their rotary engines in cars long before the RX-7, but his post said and I quote "the Rx-7's 1971-1985"

I was thinking that all the 5-speeds were the same unit.

83 is when they switched to the 225 MM clutch.

Where is this Identification on the Tranny or on the Flywheel, I would like to know whether or not to use the 215MM or 225MM Clutch Disc. Are the Pressure plates the same for all 12A? Oh I ment 17979-1985, Thanks everyone for pointing that out.

Clutches are grouped as such when stock. 79-82 uses the 215MM
83-85 uses the 225mm.

Whatever trans in there may have nothing to do with what size clutch you have.
You will have to pull the trans if you do not know what year set up you have.
