I try to stick with the old stuff (Dextron II?). Can't remember off the top of my head. I suspect that some of the newer, fancy types, might have other stuff in it that could cause issues, but I have no specific evidence of this.

And the ATF still provides plenty of lubrication, so no worries there.

This trick comes from the book "How To Hotrod and Race Your Datsun", and was used by both of the major race teams for years. Shouldn't be a problem with any classic Japanese tranny.

When I change out my rear end ( new axles and everything) should I tear the gears out and inspect them or just change the oil out and put it in there?

Before I change any oil I usually drain about a quart out. Then refill that quart with ATF. Run it for about 50 miles then drain and refill it. I only use Redline shockproof oils in my diff and trans from now on. I have gone through 2 trannies and 3 diffs with this engine. Since switching to Redline I've had no issues. ATF has detergents which are great for cleaning out grime and grit, but it doesn't do well with shock loading so drive it gingerly with it in there. I have done that on transmissions with 3rd gear syncro's going out and it has cured the problem before.

 

This makes me wonder if you can do the same with seafoam? Not a whole can,
maybe 1/4 of it or so?
