Trans fluid
Hi y'all!
Been a LONG time since I've posted here, I've owned 3 1st gens, one FC, and FD, now, down to just a REPU. I am on the lookout for a decent '79, however.
Anyhoo, back in the day, pennzoil syncromesh was just about the best stuff around for our old syncros. I'm swapping in an 80 5 speed in the truck, is that what you guys still suggest for these old trannys, or is something better afoot? Pennzoil actually quieted a scratchy 3rd gear on my 88vert that was running redline in it..I've been sold ever since.
Thanks!

Bruce Toski sent a mass email to some REPU owners the other day. He linked to a site that has some REPU pictures. One of the pictures was an old window sticker where it listed a 4 speed 'syncromesh' transmission. I guess that means we can use pennzoil synchromess in our trannies, right? The ribcase trannies are similar enough to the soothcase trannies that I don't think it will matter.
I have a couple bottles of syncromesh that will go into an '81-'83 FB tranny for my S model. The tranny previously had well over two quarts red auto tranny fluid and had sounded a little rough and was sort of hard to shift. Of course the clutch master and slave weren't that great. I drained the red crap and used valvoline 80w90. I've since drained it and can't wait to feel/hear how the syncromesh does.
Some forum members will recommend a mixture of red crap and regular gear oil like 80w90. I'd say my tranny fit that description for a brief period and it didn't sound or shift that great. Can't wait to try the synchromesh.
Oh, one more thing. I tried a '79 or '80 5 speed in my REPU about ten years ago. It just needed the tranny crossmember to be slotted along with the rubber tranny mount. You'll have to do the same unless you have a '77 which has the mounting studs on the frame rails the required distance further rearward. I wouldn't recommend relocating your frame studs because there are brake and fuel lines in the way.

To help with scratchy synchros, I've always used 50/50 ATF/Gear Oil. The ATF cleans out the synchros nicely, and you can run this mixture full time...

I just put Mobil1 75W-90 Synthetic in my GSL-SE, when I bought the car the shifting seemed notchy, now it's really smooth. I didn't really think about using Penzoil Synchromesh, maybe I should have, but it's quite smooth w/ the M1.

Redline MTF in all my cars, including the REPU where it works smooth as silk. Been doing it for years, and any other gearlube will have to prove itself to me somehow.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure there's stuff out now just as good or better than the syncromesh (synthetic, maybe), but I'll probably see if autozone has it anyway.
When I first heard about it, I was told to use GM Syncromesh..at $9 a quart! Later I found it was made by pennzoil....saved me about $6 a pop.
I have the slotted crossmember ready to go, BTW.
