Tranny swap?
Tranny swap?
I have an 83 engine, and 83 a tranny. My tranny is kinda messing up, and i have a friend who will give another tranny, but niether of us know what year it is. All i know forsure its not from an sa and it looks similar if not the same as mine now. How can i tell what year it is, or does it not matter?
A SA tranny is a bolt up replacement too, just not really a bolt-in replacement. The only problem is the shifter is remote on the '81 - '85 and requires some modifications to the tunnel and possibly the console. Otherwise, it works fine.
The SE tranny will usually have a slit vent on the passenger side thats cast into the bellhousing. It faces to the rear and is for clutch cooling. It will also have a taller 5th gear. Direct bolt into any 81-85......
The N/A 2nd gen trannies are nearly the same unit as the 81-85's,with slightly different gear ratios, and a shifter thats about 1" further to the rear.
Like the SA tranny, they are a bolt "on" to the engine, but not a bolt "in" since the shifter will hit the back of the hole in the tranny tunnel. They can be made to work in the FB,but the FC boxes arent known to be very reliable since the FC is heavier and more powerful......its nearly the same amount of work to install a TII tranny into the FB,which is notoriously strong and reliable.
