tranny questions

Hey everyone, the noises coming from my tranny are finally starting to get to me. It's the problem where I get gear whine in every gear and much less whine in fourth. I read something earlier about this being linked to transmission bearings.
Anyone know just how difficult it is to rebuild a tranny? It's my daily driver so I would actually be looking at buying a used or junkyard tranny and rebuilding that, but how long would it take(first tranny rebuild, no rush, haynes manual)?
About how much does this cost to do it yourself, any links.. I coudn't find any parts from mazdatrix? I think I'm just looking for synchro's and bearings but I know jack about transmissions.
I am very willing to take my time and keep everything neat and organized, is this something I will be able to do or would i be better off having a shop do it? (I'm a poor college student and my car never been in a shop so I would really really like to avoid it)
So far I have rebuilt my carb, and swapped out my engine(blew all apex seals on the front rotor, replaced with a junkyard 12a w/carb, dist, water pump.) and fixed/troubleshooted just about every problem that's come up so far.

Any tips, or other things I can do? I've already swapped out the oil, no difference.

Oh yea, 83GSL 5 speed.

That's a good point. Considering the noise yours is making, odds are in your favor that whatever you pick up used or from a u-pull or junkyard will be better than you have. Try a direct swap first. If it's your lucky day, it'll be a decent tranny and you can REALLY take your time rebuilding your original.

Most people just go find another tranny. Rebuilding is very expensive. I just picked up a used tranny from an '85 for my '83 that is said to be in good condition. I lucked out and found it here, from another forum member... $100. I plan to tuck it away in the corner of my garage and save it for a rainy day.

This should help you decide whether it's something you would want to tackle yourself:

http://www.miata.net/garage/tranny_rebuild.html
It refers to a Miata transmission but yours would not be very different:

And a thread from the 2nd Gen forum, with comments from a couple of guys who have rebuilt their own transmissions:

Some parts would have to come from Mazda. But you may be able to find a bearing supply business locally which would be cheaper than Mazda.
