Unhappy tranny problems

i think my tranny and/or rear end are on their last leg. The tranny has been making weird sounds lately, and i don't think the rear end is too far behind. Being poor, i want to know if the tranny and/or out of any other mazda products, such as a 323 or a pick up, will bolt on my car with out much modification. I am probadly going to buy the '81 Rx-7 I mentioned in a earlier post but i want to know what else i could rob drive train parts off of.

Thanks

go get one out of a junkyard.. there is no point going with a different tranny if you dont need to.

without much work = get a tranny or rearend from the same year range RX-7 (in your case '81-85 tranny, '81-82 rearend)

Other years will require some work, and trannies/rearends from other vehicles will require a lot of work.

Might consider rebuilding the tranny. I'm replacing the bearings in mine right now and they're quite simple to disassemble/reassemble. There are also quite a few shops who can do this as similar Mazda transmissions are used in smaller Ford trucks (Ranger, f'rinstance, according to a tranny shop owner I talked to) so they're not nearly as perplexing to your average mech as rotaries are.

A rebuilt tranny is good for a long time, whereas a junkyard tranny might also be good for a long time or be good for a week.

hey while u guys are on the subject of trannies... i just did my clutch, and are there any tricks or noted areas as to how the tranny lines up? im hoping there isnt any special larger splines anywhere.. and such.. havent really tried hard yet.. but it seems that the tranny doesnt want to line up right and come together with the engine block......

There are 2 dowells in the motor that fit into the trannys bellhousing that facisilates lining it up easy... Just get the trans and motor at the same angle, slide the trans input shaft through the pressure plate and away you go. Its sorta a bitch but after you arms start shaking and you think the trans is gonna fall on your chest, you'll get it.
