Tranny filled from top on '80 5 spd?

Just wondering if it's really possible to fill the transmission via the top (remove shifter, then slowly fill) instead of using the fill plug on the side of a 1980 5 spd. RX-7 tranny. A friend of mine just told me you could use this method, but I think it only applies to SA 79/80 transmissions. Does this sound right? Seems much easier than fiddling around with the side fill plug and pumps, etc.

I'm about to change the fluid on the tranny in my RX-2 and want to make it easy as possible without creating a huge mess everywhere.

Thanks,
Mike

Mine's a 5 speed. Weren't 5 speeds available back then? All I know is it was installed into my RX-2 with no cutting or shortening of anything so it has to be either a 79 or 80 tranny. Thanks for the info, should make things a bit easier.

Yeah 75w90 from what I've seen. I think I'm going to try Redline MT-90. Seems that Redline and Royal Purple are the top choices for synthetic.

Yeah, MT-90 is 75w90.

I'm curious, has anyone ever had any bad experiences with Redline and/or Royal Purple synthetic tranny fluids? I was talking with a guy earlier while working on my car and he said the synthetics will leak out on older vehicle transmissions unless you replace the seals @ the same time. Anyone ever experience this after switching from regular to Redline, etc. synthetics?

Thanks,
Mike

The 5-speed was an option in '80. I think the S model was the only one with a 4-speed. Mine's a GS, and I have a 5-speed.
