Do you have a multimeter? You can unplug the TPS and check the resistance between the each 'eye' or the connector and the 'mouth'. Each one should vary between 1k and 5k as you move the TPS plunger in and out. One will decrease as you push in and the other will increase.

You can also get a used TPS as the new ones are so expensive. The TPS can cause some strange behavior on the SE when it is bad or out of adjustment. Can you get one or both lights to go out if you push the plunger in or open the throttle?

I built my TPS tester with two resistors and male- female connectors, it has worked great. Radio Shack had all the parts for around 6 bones. I will try to find the writeup for this model tester.

When you say your car is surging are the RPM's jumping up and down? Or is this something that happens when you are trying to be steady on the gas and the car cant keep a steady pace?

Also do some searching on for threads from longduck. He has done some great writeups for us SE guys.

That almost seems like bucking caused by gas in the oil. When was the last time you changed your oil? Has the car flooded recently?

I'm not great at trouble shooting GLS-SE idle problems, so nobody flame me.

Hello, I had a similar problem several months back. I thought my tps was dead, turned out the car was just horribly timed (had just bought it). If nothing else one more thing to make sure its on the up and up since timing is fairly damn easy.

The bucking can definately be caused by the TPS being out of adjustment. One of the things that you might want to try to do also is to remobe the TPS and push the plunger all the way in and let it come all the way out. You have to figure that the range that it is used is extremely short and this area can have a little bit of wear or even crap on it, moving it full length can also help.

The other thing that i did was to use a multimeter to get the TPS adjustment close (about 1K, which is where it is supposed to be set at idle), then use the light rigg to dial it in. That way you know you are at least in the ball park when you try to do the fine adjustments using the lights.

Hope this helps,
Bryan
