That's when the actual needle hits 7? at 125mph?... i'm just asking because i'm considering doing a rear end swap with better acceleration gears... but i'd rather not top out in the 1/4 mile

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
it will accelerate real fast to 110 mph, then climb real slow to about 125 , then it stops pulling unless your going downhill, then who knows!...this was in a stock GSL-SE ! not bad!

Well, 3500rpm in 5th gear is what, about 80mph? 7000rpm would be ~160mph in theory. Stock is what, 4.09:1? If you sent to about a 5.40 which is about a 25% difference in ratios, then you would be at 7000rpm around 125-130mph. I doubt you'll be using a diff gear that high.

I've taken my new engine up to about 123 before slowing down (and it got there pretty quickly in comparison to my old engine). Rx7Carl has had his up to 137 on the track (adjusted to aftermarket tach reading in 5th, then factoring in his wheel sizes and rear-end ratio)
Mazda gave a figure that any stock 7 should hit. Obviously, those of us with *****, stupidity or a track have found out it's not quite a ceiling

After I bought my SE in Sacremento CA.........I drove back to LA.........averaged 80-90 all the way......I hit
110 twice with the AC on........I also hit 100 going up the Grapevine........It has lots of power in 5th.......
I did not try to go any faster..........It had the orig suspension on and it just seemed to float..........
Great first ride...........

EX Pres of DFW Drunks
Just a hair over 130 in mine
according to a little gearing spreadshet I have...
Stock -SE (.76 5th gear from 84/early 85)
7k rpm
121mph 4th gear
159 mph 5th gear
seems a little higher than what I've seen in the real world, but my tires aren't quite stock size, and my speedo may be off...

See? About 160mph. It's all in the math. In order to actually hit 7000rpm in 5th gear, you'll need a lot more horsepower. The car is drag limited (wind drag, drivetrain drag) to 125-135mph.
Like I implied, I would not worry much about using a lower gear (higher final drive ratio) with regards to limiting your top speed. The reasons why most manufacturers do not make it so their cars hit redline in top gear is fuel economy, engine longevity, and engine buziness on the hghway. I regularly cruise at 80-90mph on highways. 3500-4000rpm in my RX-7 is pretty high if I were using it for a long distance trip. Lots more wear than if it was geared down to 3000rpm and it would be quieter and get better fuel mileage.
