So what types of tools should i buy, for working on my fb? I am new to this what do you recommend?

 

set of metric sockets and wrenches
a ratchet
a long tube that you can slip on the socket/wrench (used for taking those near impossible nuts and bolts off)
if you can get a compressor buy it along with an impact gun.
basically all you need is a standard set of tools
unless your rebuilding your engine

-map gas torch or a real oxyacetelyne torch set if you so desire
-metric tap and die set
-thred file
-a set of panel poppers from snap on. they allow easy removal of the door skins without damaging the backing
-pick set
-standard and deep well metric socket set 1/4, 1/8, 1/2 drives
-extensions of all different lengths 1/4, 1/8, 1/2 drives
-a few cans of sea foam
-fire extinguisher
-bench vice
-dremel
-craftsman damaged bolt removel set (can post a pic if need be)

thats all i can think of right now. all of my tools that i own are geared towards working on the 7. if you want pics of what i keep in the drawers feel free to ask and i'll snap a couple pics of some of the specialty stuff mentioned and maybe some that i forgot to mention.

 

i will say this. the more tools you get the happier you will be. I have done jobs that are bloody nightmares that take me hours that i can do in minutes with the right tools.

a few things i would add to the above. keep in mind the ones mentioned on the top will allow you to do most jobs.

specialty tools can be normally rented from autozone for free all you have to do is pay a deposit that you get back.

air tools will make your life very easy.
a good set of swivel sockets
and the other thing i would recommend looking up any tools for a job you plan on doing. sometimes a tool that makes life easy is only a couple of bux.

another thing i always cuss when i don't have one handy is a magnet its allot nicer to just use a telescoping magnet to pick up that wrench you just dropped.

thats all i can think about right now. i am lucky to have access to a friends auto shop and its become amazing how easy things have become since then.

That's about the basics I'd say for being able to do anything on an RX7; I'll add anything I forgot off the top of my head...

Oh, and then you have your creature comforts like an Impact Wrench and electric Screwdriver.

 

RATCHETING WRENCHES. Those have saved me on numerous occasions. Especially when getting the back left bolt off the stock carb. Yeah, you will know which one I am talking about soon.

 

Let's not forget the most important tool yet: a pipe wrench!

I had to use one to get the damn P/S line out of that one block on the fenderwell. Hell, even a flare-nut wrench wouldn't take that damn thing off. Love that pipe wrench. While it may not fit everywhere, it'll help for some spots. Be sure to get one with a good set of teeth.

Oh yeah, for $200 you should be able to get a decent "starter kit" of a mechanic's Craftsman's tool set with carry case. These have helped me out a lot.

I need a set of wracheting box wrenches. Those I could've used when working on my exhaust hangars.

 

Jeezus is NOT LYING at all! Ratcheting Wrenches are the MOST amazing tool ever conceived. They have saved me HOURS of work, and many skinned knuckles. Get a pair for sure!

Racheting wrenches are indeed amazing. MY answer is simple. Buy anything you possibly can. Everything at one point or another will be useful. This includes things like a welder, big compressor, air tools, engine stand with rotary adapter, engine hoist, floor jack, etc. Beer doesn't hurt and a swear jar will become a college fund for your kid(s)

 

These comes with a bunch of standard stuff, not useful for this car.

Ratcheting wrenches from Snap-on is the best...

 

+1 for rachet wrenches (the Kobalt ones are pretty good), get the kind with the pivoting box head. Youll live and die with 12mm. damn near everything comes apart with it.

Uh yea the beer thing is also standard issue.

 

8mm 10mm 11mm 12mm 14mm and a 2'1/16 in socket and the corresponding breaker bars ratchets and wrenches along with screw drivers for your interior parts I'm pretty sure those are the only tools ive used with my car

if you get a floorjack make sure you get a set of jack stands to go with it. the cost of the stands are a lot cheaper than the hospital bill

 

I found the two most valuable tools that I bought were a 13mm dist wrench for taking off the carburetor nuts) and a 10mm stubby gear wrench for taking off the nuts under the oil filter pedastel.

 

Forgot to add a decent pilot bearing tool remover.
