tire hitting something
SPACERS ARE FOR SHOW CARS ONLY.
They are NOT street legal, and for good reason. Not only do they screw up your suspension geometry and change your scrub point, they have been known to fail at speed and send your wheel flying off on its own adventures.

xlversatilelx , ask yourself this...would they still be in business if they were killing people or tearing up their cars? Do you recognize the brand name HKS? They also make spacers FOR THE STREET...know where these ads are to be found? In freakin' GrassrootsMotorsports magazine which I'm betting half of this Forum has never heard about. A hard-core SCCA racer-friend gave me a mag and I've been hooked on them ever since. They used spacers on their own project BMW 318i and Suddard knows what the hell is going on...call up the companies to learn the truth, not stories about inferior products or even, dare I say, Urban Myths....if you need to move your tires a scant 1/4" away from your struts or springs, this is still the cheapest way to go....

As to the "race cars use it so it must be the shiznit" arguement... race cars don't put on 20,000 miles per year. Hell, some of 'em have a complete engine and brake change after every race. If metal fatigue sets in at, say, 10,000 miles (it'll vary according to the manufacturer, etc) the race car will never have a problem, but you will in a few months.
"Oh, but they make street-legal ones too" - and most aftermarket parts come with a 'formality' disclaimer saying 'not legal for street use' somewhere in the box/instructions. They make 'street legal' neon kits and fart-can mufflers too. Do they make your car perform better? How would transferring shear forces from a solid hub to a secondary (thin) bolt system benefit you?
You move the wheel out, your suspension geometry and scrub point are still out of spec even if you DO finds someone that makes spacers that overcome the inherent harmonic fail-points that, due to the laws of physics, causes lesser spacers to give.
"Okay, so buy new rims with offset to compensate for the scrub point, etc" comes the next arguement...
Isn't it easier to just FIX what's wrong with the suspension/wheel alignment, rather than bolting other parts on and HOPE that solves the problem??
