Tin can exhaust remedies?

How can I get rid of the tin can sounding exhaust on my stock 12A exhaust? I'm running a RB roadrace setup - dual pipe header and center section with presilencers, along with the matching RB muffler. The muffler sound is great, but the presilencers emit way too much noise. They have not gotten worse over time. Basically, at any speed other than idle, it sounds like I have a pretty decent center section exaust leak, which I don't. The header has a similar, but far less harsh sound that I can live with.

I've tried replacing the center section with dual straight pipes, which changed the sound, but didn't really lessen it. The muffler sound did become more harsh, which would be acceptable if I could eliminate the rest of the noise.

I plan to port another 12A that I am building, so this will probably become more of an issue.

Any suggestions or is this the nature of the beast?

Thanks! Mike

I think yours is the first post I've read where someone was displeased with the sound of their RB long-primary exhaust setup. I hope you aren't trying to make the rotary sound like a piston engine, 'cause it won't.
Be happy, you have one of the best exhaust systems available!

Nope, just want to have the noise coming out the rear, not the sides. I love the sound of the rotary and the longevity of the RB system, but not the excessive leak-like racket. I hear very loud reflections of sound when passing parked cars, close buildings, and even curbs. Deep and throaty would be fine, tinny is not.

BTW, I pinpointed the noise source as the walls of both presilencers.

So what you are saying is that the presilencer sidwalls are pourous, or fractured in some way?

No, the entire system is rock solid, no leaks, damage, rattles, etc, just obnoxiously tinny/airy. The worst of it is coming from the presilencers, as has been the case since I installed them. I've never seen/heard another car with them, so I don't know if that's normal.

Maybe another manufacturer has a quieter center section? I could also try to wrap the thing with exhaust insulation...

Note of warning: I tried wrapping a previous RB header with exhaust insulation and the thing overheated, distorted, and cracked. It sounded like I ran over a bunch of metal clothes hangers and then fell apart.

hehe... wrapping = bad idea... rotaires = too hot!

i got the same noise problem but i'm living with it cuz it is WAY better than the stock exhaust sound.
one cheater way to beat it is slightly raise your idle rpm

i've heard that getting a streetport will make it sound more throaty and louder... (is this correct?)

I have a friend in Virginia with that exhaust, it dosent sound bad at all, the walls are so thick you cant hear anything but the rear exhaust sound. Maybe you got a defective set from racing beat, like they forgot to put in the sound deadening. Or maybe you have a tin can in there, like all those honda's do...haha j/k. Maybe I can record his exhaust next time I'm around there, and post it

Dude...I love the sound from the rear end, I just want to quiet the beast beneath. It sounds cheap and obnoxious. I know and enjoy the sound of a good setup.

Glad to see that others of you have the same situation and understand what I'm talking about. Doesn't look like there is any quick solution. I'll give RB a call.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, i've got the same problem with my midpipe.... i've got a hollowed out cat in there for now until i get a test pipe though, but even when i had a test pipe i made stuck in there it still had that sound. I assumed it was an exhaust leak.
