I think he just means the fan belt and other drive belts. Just say 20,000 tops, but if they dont look new just replace them.

these guys are jerking your leg. every 10,000 miles you should replace your timing belt. while you're at it check the cam for flat spots and adjust the lifters.

An 83 with almost 60,000!!! Those damned 83's are only good to 60,500. After that they're worthless. You should sell it to me for a hundred bucks, before it's too late, and you can't get anything out of it.

Thanks guys. This is actually my uncle's car and he is planning to give the car to me and was telling that i might need to replace a timing belt? I used to owned a 88 Turbo II 9 years ago and as i remember rotary engine do not have a timing belt but he keep telling me it does have one....

Thought maybe this first gen. has one since it is a carbureter?

Thank you for clear out for me.

ps. sorry for the typo i made.

again, rotaries dont have a timing belt, unless they are some piston powered bastard child, im sure the belt you are talking about is the alternator belt. Check to make sure its not frayed or worn. If it is jacked up then replace it.

Hi,

I just got off the phone with my uncle this morning to confirm that RX-7 does not have a timing belt. I got confused by my uncle because he was insist that it does have and I am not pretty sure the belt he talk about is a alternator belt.

Thank you very much for all your help. Sorry for causing a joke in here

I think the guy joined the forum to find out this type of info. Half the 7's I see on Ebay say they have 4 bangers in them. At least the guy got an 84 with only 60k and he lives in a great part of the country. Welcome to the forum

Actually, he probably means the oil pump chain, which looks remarkably like a timing chain and sits behind a "timing cover" (the front cover). People who don't know rotaries tend get confused by that. But, as everyone correctly said, rotary engines do not have a timing belt or chain...there are no cams to synchronize! Don't bother trying to educate him, as some people just can't grasp the idea of an engine without valves, cams, etc. Just smile and say you will take care of it. If you want to educate yourself, however, please visit my Rotary Engine Illustrated web site for animations and illustrations of the internal workings of the engine.
