What kind of timing light is it? Sometimes the inductive style will pick up the leading ignition even when it is clamped onto the trailing lead. If it is an inductive light, try connecting it as close to the distributor cap as possible on the T1 lead.

Is your vac advance disconnected?

If so, try setting your timing while idle is a 4,000 rpms, then check?

the ignitors use a single wire for the ground, check the wiring diagram, I had the same thing happening so I changed this so each ignitor was completely wired separately

You must have read the diagram wrong because the ignitors do not use the same ground wire. Each of the coils has a seperate wire running from the negative terminal to it's respective ignitor. The ignitor simply acts as a switch in the coils primary circuit by interrupting the current path to ground. The ignitor itself is grounded through the body of the distributor.

That's because the circuit is completed through the back of the ignitors to the distributor/engine block which is obviously common. The actual WIRES already run seperately from each of the coils to it's respective ignitor.

Get a new light. Some lights just arent compatible. My cheapie walmart special works great. My $$ sun light does what yours does. Go figure.
