Timing mess on 13b
Ok here iswhat we have
s4 13b with a decent sized streetport
12a dizzy
stock flywheel
-se front cover
racing beat carb and intake
and alot of fumes
We got the car running the other day but didnt fool with the timing, and besides a large flatspot when heavy on the throttle the car ran good and idled well. Today we decided to mess with the timing because I figured it was the biggest factor in the bog. Put a timimg light on it to find the marks around 90* away. I thought all we had to do was turn the pulley and go on with our lives. Tried that and it will only go on the way we have it now, the same with the other pulley we tried, one from an s4 na, the other from an s4 t2. So being the brave people that me and carcars owner are we pull the dizzy and figure we just lucked out and put it in just wrong enough to run. WE went through all of the steps we could find to put it back in time all with the same luck, extremely rough running almost sounding like we lost a rotor(already checked its fine), so after about 2 hrs of fuckimg with it we give in and call it a night and now here we sit. What exactly are we doing wrong here.
I would like to add, when we got the car running I had to line up the dizzy with the roll pin instead of the small dent in the gear. WE tried duplicating this with no result.

The timing pulley from 85 and earlier can be clocked in 4 different positions. It wasn't until the FC that they changed the bolt pattern to eliminate that. I have however run across an FC pulley installed wrong by some rotary ignorant piston mechanics. Once you have the timing pulley and pin set at the leading mark, and the dizzy set with indents lined up, you should have no problem. If you can find an SE dizzy, you'll be better off as that's when they changed the trailing timing for the 13Bs.

ive seen rotary shops drill out the holes in the FC pulley so they could put em on wrong... people work SO HARD to screw stuff up...
to answer the question though, step one is to find TDC #1 rotor, and make sure the marks on the pulley agree. THEN get the light out and set the timings

If the pulley is on correct and the dizzy was correctly put in:
- check connections between the J-109s and the coils. One on the front of the dizzy is leading, the one facing the alt is trailing. On the coils, the one closest to the front of the car is trailing.
- check coil wires between coil and dizzy cap to make sure they are not crossed
- check plug wires to make sure they are all going to the right spot. Sounds like they might be crossed or you are timing off the wrong one (should be clipping onto L1).
