Timing light

Hey guys!
I just got a used timing light at a garage sale, and got it for $3 dollars.
It is a Actron III Advance Timing Analizer #CP7519. Chromed & made in the USA.
I have never used a timing light and could use some instruction on using one.
This one has a **** that says "degrees advance" in the back.

How is it operated? What would i set it to?

Thanks in adsvance!

That one is too advanced for you, i recommend selling it to me for $5, lol

You put the inductive pick up on the L1 plug with the arrow facing towards the plug and the same when you do the T1. Set the advance at o degrees for stock advance. When on the L1
the light should line up witht he yelllow mark on the pointer and the orange mark on the t plug.

As said, you use it at 0 degrees to check timing, if youre running stock timing. What you can do however, is advance the timing or retard the timing for performance, and since you dont have a little plate that shows degrees of advance on the engine, your type of timing light comes in handy. Normally, if youre setting advance, some engines have a timing plate instead of a pin like ours. So, you would just adjust the timing until the mark lines up with the degree mark on the plate you want. However, since our engines dont have those, you can use the timing light to check the amount of advance you have it set at by rotating the **** from 0 up until the timing marks line up again. Check the ****, and the number its pointing to is the number of degrees of advance you have. Or, say for instance you want to set your engine at 3 degrees advance, all you have to do is set the timing light at 3 degrees advance, and adjust the distributor to set the timing as normal and line up the marks. Except, now its set at 3 degrees advance rather than 0 or stock. So, if you look at it with a normal timing light (or yours set to 0) it would look wrong because the marks wont line up. Get it?

Thanks for all the great info and help!

TurboSE, what is the make & model of your timing light?
Maybe that will help someone answer your question.
