Timing

I looked in the book and the timing sectoon confused the hell out of me.

1. How do you time your car and what degree should it be at?

2. Would mods affect the timing on where it should be?

3. Can I use a standard timing light?

The Hayns Manual should have the timing.
Just re-read the section carfuly

Some people like to advance timing or retard timing based on specific applications for the car, this also done in conjunction with some mods

As Far as I know you can use a standard timing light. I have always thought that timing is timing, the engin dictates when the light flashes?

Good Luck

Timing answered by YAW

Hi,

I came across this article by YAW when I was digging into the timing on my car. I can't seem to find the article on his site anymore but luckily I saved it.

Try this link: YAW's timing Advice

You will want to experiment with the timing as stated in YAW's article. It depends on driving style and engine set-up. I have mine well advanced and I love it. Not a lot of guts at the lower end, but the top end just flies! Get yourself an adjustable timing light. It's a lot easier to work with rather than trying to make new markings on the pulley. I got mine from Crappy Tire for a pretty good price.

Yeah, an adjustable timing lite is about $70, good investment and easier than the Yaw procedure.

first off BLIFFLE: look at your signiture, NO PISTN"?? shoudl be "NO PISTONS" just thought i'd help

as for timing, the degrees for a 12 is leading:20 and trailing: 0, 13b is leading:20, and trailing: 5. Yes a timing light will work, to time leading set the light on leading 1(thats front rotor leading plug). to adjust the leading timing, loosen the bolt the hold the distributor in and rotate the distributor. trailing is timed off the trailing 1(front rotor trailing plug). to adjust it lossen the 2 screws that hold teh vacum advace in place and pull it in or out. the markings on the e_shaft pully are hard to see, so get a piant ball marker and mark the timing mark and the spot on the pully where you can easily see. then the light works great.

Jerad - "NO PISTN" is his licence plate. I don't know about where you live, but most places in Canada and the US can't have more than 7 characters and a space (or clip-art image) in a licence plate. "NO PISTONS" is 9 characters and a space, not possible for a licence plate.

Thanks for the timing info everybody I just may get around to buying the light and adjusting it once the car's running

I think you're wrong there... actually I know you're wrong. The stock timing setting for a 12A at idle is 0* Leading and 20* ATDC Trailing. 13B would be 5* ATDC Leading and 20* ATDC Trailing.

Let me ask you this. My pulley has a fair amount of surface rust on it and I can't see the original paint marks but there is however, two notchs. Question. Which is which timing mark. Is the right one the leading or the trailing.

Hmm, I think the manual will show you which is which. Right?

The left one is 20 ATDC, the right one is 5 ATDC (as you face the engine).

edit: duh, that's on teh 13B. Regardless, the left one is the big number, the right one is the small number.

lol Why are you asking me that? I was just pointing out what the stock timing marks are because that's obviously what he was talking about. Don't want anyone to get confused.

If you really want to get the most out of the engine then use an advance light (or mark the pulley like Yaw) and set the timing at about 4000rpm. Just remember to double the readings when using an advance dial light on a rotary. I think I had mine cranked up to about 26* BTDC leading and 16* BTDC trailing when I had the Rx-7.

I had to clean off a pulley and carefully handpaint white dots in the notches to time one car. Once marked, it is obvious how it works.

There are two marks... one for leading and one for trailing. The one that comes up first is obviously the leading.
