three peice spoiler and bondo: A match made in heaven?

And now for my next trick...

I recently had my '81 repainted (pictures as soon as the weather improves) and I had a factory(?) Wings West(?) three piece spoiler installed. Here's the rub; I asked the bodyshop if they could blend in the spoiler to the body with bondo, to make it lookclean and uniform. They said that it would not be advisable, as the bondo could crack and it would look bad as a result.

I've seen other '7's with the same style of spoiler all bondo-ed in (Omid's from BCRX7 comes to mind). Was the body shop trying to save me from unsightly future cracks in the paint finish? Or were they just trying to do the minimal amount of work? I think they were just being lazy. What do you guys think? If I bondo, will it crack?

if the shop was being lazy, they wouldn't have installed it in the first place. any shop will do something, its the good ones that will tell you the truth.

bondo will crack and make it look like ****. bondo is only a body filler, its ment to fill in small dents in small portions. when you do serious body work like wide body they will use bondo but a very expencive kind made with lots of fiberglas that can withstand some stuff but most of the time that cracks as well.

you can do it.. but most likely in a few months small cracks will apear, and in a year or so it will not look good.

Bondo is nothing but polyester resin with a ton of additives (things like small fibers of fiberglass, talc powder, etc to give it that putty texture).

As a result, it hardens to become very brittle, and if used in a place where things flex or stretch it will most likely crack.

However, you can get your own resin, some regular fiberglass fibers, and possibly a flex additive from home depot or the likes and make your own "bondo" type material. Epoxy resin has a little flex to it already, which is nice. Polyester would most certainly need an additive.

That's probably a decent shop... A fucked up shop would have taken your cash and said your SOL when it cracked.
