I would think that lock would be 1 or 2 things:
An alarm, I saw a setup kinda like on a Astro van, It beeped like ****' when you open the door without turning the key.
OR
A fuel cut-off switch.
To quote 82 transam "open the hatch and look behind that hanging piece of carpet and see where taht lock goes. thats the only way you'll know."
Or possiblely turn the key and see what happends.

It's probably a new lock for the hatch. I have seen other Rx-7s with that circle key/lock swap from the original locks. It's supposed to be harder to break in or something.

yeah i was gonna say it looks like a savanna 12at badge that they put on ealy models, and your car isnt an 81...by the way (correct me if im wrong) but sa22c ended in 80, your sig says your an 81 rx-7 driver.....oh yeah and the way to tell if your rx-7 is a "turbo" look at the passenger side engine compartment right next to the passenger side inner fender well,.,,thatll tell ya if its turbo or not........
