Question To those who have had their Nikki Carbs rebuilt...

how much did you pay for the job? i was quoted $400 canadian dollars to do the job yesterday after going around to 5 different shops trying to find someone who wasnt afraid to work on it. does this sound reasonable? the rats nest is removed, which should knock a few bux off labour.

i've read a lot of posts here where people were having pretty much the exact same problems as me, mostly a lumpy idle and backfiring, running too rich in general. i've talked to a few people who think the accelerator pump is gone.

i figure i may aswell just get the entire thing rebuilt, and since i know absolutely nothing about carb's yet, i'd rather have someone with some experience do it.

yay or nay? not sure if im willing to rebuild it myself, but im fairly mechanical knowledgeable, my other car is a 1990 Toyota supra, with a Greddy 20G turbo and all supporting mods, running 20psi boost. i've done almost all of the engine work on that myself, but these carbs are a entirely new ball game for me. i might start doing it rebuilding one of my spare carbs and see how far i get and how much of a headache it is.

o'well, just asking for suggestings and how much you guys paid for yours to be rebuilt?

thanks

- Murray

If your mechanically inclined you canr do it. Its just tedious and careful work. We charge $150 USD + shipping to do a rebuild, but we're dirt cheap, and dont make much off it.

You should have Carl or Stearling do it. Everyone here says they do great work.

But there's alot of info to help with rebuilding. It's not that hard.

...It's not $400.00 hard!

I got the kit from Lordco for $40, spent a day with my Haynes, some beer and figured it out. Wasn't too hard, and ran waaay sweeter after. The insides had alot of build-up, having compressed air helped too. After my backfiring rate droppped to nothing, before a moderate 3-2 shift would give 6-8 pops, now it's just the occasional flame show when I want.

For $150USD you can have it "just rebuilt" by Rx7Carl and Sterling... or for *still* less than you were quoted, you could have your carb turned into a lean, mean, street performance part by the same guys Since I live in Quebec and don't have emissions, I got it done by them. I don't know if you have emissions, but if you were seriously *considering* paying $400CDN for a rebuild, why not go ahead and have Rx7Carl and Sterling give your stock carb the once-over.

I guarantee, you will not regret it. If you travel through the mountains (changing altitudes) with your car though, make sure to inform them of this... I had the altitude compensator completely removed from mine, you'd probably still need yours

When I just rebuilt mine, it ws the first carb I had EVER rebuilt. I thought it was fairly straightforward. The only thing I did that helped things was to roughly sketch the carb from the top and mark where each screw went, then once the screw was removed I punched out its corresponding place on the drawing and put it in the hole (dirty). $150 from Sterling is really a good deal, but if you're just going for a rebuild and you can work a screwdriver, get to it.

cool, thanks. what sort of modifcations does sterling do?

and yeah, theres no emissions on my carb. not even sure if the altitude compensator is still there... i gotta get reading. just replaced the idler arm today and redid the brakes so atleast its back up to spec on handling/brake, but the engine still runs like ***. haha

haha yeah i remember see'ing your car out at western a year or two ago shooting mad flames. im guessing that was before you rebuilt the carb?

flames are cool and all, but i'd rather have the carb working how its supposed to.....

Well, bad news; -Carl's price quote is incorrect.
A plain rebuild by us is $170.00 plus $30.00 S&H. -Even then, that's the price before we raised it by twenty bucks. But because we get so little call for simple rebuilds, we'll keep it @ a flat $2C.
Here's the info on the carb services we offer...

The site is incomplete and hasn't been updated in a while. The tech articles will explain some of what we do.

Its easy to rebuild them and you can learn some stuff and it doesn't cost . except the rebuild kit and some cleaner. I did it in my bathroom, and it runs great I even modded it.

Rx7carl is correct. If you can't find one locally, I can get you one and ship it to you. I've got three sitting on the shelf at work "just in case" the wharehouse decides to quit stocking them. Same goes for the old school Fel-Pro 12a gasket kit.
