think i blew an apex

Unhappy think i blew an apex

k so i was taking the car out for a joyride, i just got the carb rebuilt and wanted to feel the POWER (lol ).
so i took a turn then all of a sudden the car shuddered, and the solid Brat Brat Brat of the exhaust note turned into a brat...brat...brat, so i believe that denotes a blown apex seal .

-so where can i get a whole new engine or a rebuild (and btw what exactly is the "core engine")


i thank you guys for your help in advance

edit*- it also had a catastrophic loss of power like going from solid 75-80hp at the wheels to 25hp mabey if im lucky

Core is the block. Meaning irons, cover and housings and everything inside.

Before assuming its done, do the ghetto compression test or go take your plugs out and spin the motor by hand feeling for the pfft of each seal.

Lets be optimistic and go through the tests before going off and spending oodles of money.

well lets say it isnt the seals, what else could suddenly cause the car to shudder and lose power, give me some examples pleas

but i will test it because i really would like to save, at least it isnt my dd

Why would this engine break an apex seal? Were you overrevving? Was oil level OK? What kind of oil? What's the history of the car? How many miles?

etc.

145 thousand miles, fresh oil(conventional), cant say how the previous owner drove it but its got some paint fade on the rear drivers side quarter, and plenty of little dents, and the block is pretty dirty so id say drove it nice but they let the carb pretty much fall apart, and didnt put any air in the tires so its seen its share of damage.

but i was driving it rather spirited, so who knows a couple shifts above 7k on accident may have popped it

-k so heres an in depth description of exactly what it did, k i took a turn real fast and the rear end went around a little bit, so i caught it, slid a bit and recovered, (its the middle of the night on an empty road and it was accidental) so i stopped at a stop sign and it dropped to idle, i gave it a little gas to start moving smooth, i turn (slow) and it shudders hard (i go wtf), i try giving it some more gas to get it going and it starts to bog, and is sounding real ratty and shaky, i get home and the whole exhaust area (underbody, muffler area, right around rear wheels) is Hot, and its going Brt bt bt Brt(the exhaust note) so i turn it off and restart it with the same sound, and did i mention after it shuddered it basically became a GEO Metro

no i havnt turned it on today, but if i remember right, it didnt hiss/backfire/screach when i turned it off, so if its the ignition how do i fix that.

go check your spark. Leading is the one labeled L. take ur plugs out and see if there is spark.

As Kenetsu said sounds like leading was lost so theres a good chance either your cables fell off (unlikely) or your leading coil is dead.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago, after lots of diagnostics that didn't pin it down, including a bad compression test that improved after sea foam soaking for several days, it still had the same "running on one rotor" symptoms. (See an earlier post about "Is this the sound of an apex seal gone bad?"

The jury is still out but while tearing into the top half of the engine I found the shutter (coasting) valve stuck closed. Now that would make a nice explanation, wouldn't it?

I should know later today when I put it all back together after replacing a leaking intake manifold, inspecting the carb and cleaning up the engine bay, which is always one of the nice things about doing work under the hood.

So get out the manual and get busy with the diagnostics!

The main clue to this guy's issue is the fact that his exhaust system overheated after the car started running badly. Clear indication of a timing malfunction, most likely caused by loss of leading ignition unless he has been recently playing around with his timing.

Just pull the leading coil wire and have a volunteer hold it while you turn over the engine. If they don't scream then you have no leading ignition. Then repeat with the trailing. Choice your volunteer carefully

Ken was the first one to suggest that I check my coasting valve, as I recall.

It could be the coil. But the ignitor would be my second guess. check all of your ignition connections before you spend money.
