Question are these 2 trannys interchangeable?

i need a 5speed tranny for my 83 gsl. will an s5 tranny out of an 89 rx7 be interchangeable? if it will work then will the gear ratios be the same?

sure don't. the trans is too long and you will need to cut a hole further back for the shifter and the ratios are much different.

The ratios are much different, but you can swap the tailhousing from your '83 onto the '89 N/A (NOT TURBO) tranny and make it a bolt in.

The ratios will suck road kill, though. Plus you might have transmission interference with the oil cooler's hardline, but that can be easily solved with a die grinder to the tranny case.
