Question Thermal reactor to exhaust?

All I need to get my '79 going is a new main exhaust pipe that runs direct from the thermal reactor. Is this even possible? Nobody seems to know what I'm talking about, I've searched everywhere, and the one time a parts store DID special order it, they called back(the factory) and said it was unavailable. I'm confused and frustrated.

What do I have to do, replace the whole system? My "7" is worthless sitting in the driveway. I don't mean to sound like a whiner, but like I said, I'm frustrated!

Give Mazdatrix a call but first take a look here and here. Get the flanges and gaskets you need then have a muffler shop near you fabricate a connecting pipe for you. No big deal. This kind of fabrication should be childs play for a muffler shop.

In fact, this might be the bolt-on part you are looking for. The folks at Mazdatrix can assist you.

get a header and take off the oven. it will probably end up costing close to the same in the end. fixing the oem **** is expensive. might as will drop 100lb and get a very handsome performance gain.

I second what initab said.
Fabrication of this sort of this isn't all that big a deal.

I found this on the RacingBeat site, but they don't have then for '79s. $92

RX-7 Catalytic Converter Replacement Pipes*

As a result of our testing of catalytic converter equipped RX-7s, we offer an economical alternative to headers - simply replace the catalytic converter with a straight pipe. The power increase is significant - typically about 2/3 of the horsepower gain that a header will offer. While the noise level is higher than stock, it is possible to change from the stock muffler to the Power Pulse muffler for an additional power increase combined with a lower, more mellow exhaust note.

These kits include instructions, hardware, and where necessary, an emission control passage cover plate. In all models, the pipe replaces all of the catalytic converters. The pipe for the GSL-SE includes the connection necessary to actuate the 6-port intake valves. Gaskets are not included, but are available separately. (See Gasket section)

Fabrication of this IS a big deal.

The thermal reactor-to-heat exchanger pipe is not just a pipe. It's dual layer. The exhaust goes through the center layer, and the air from the air pump first goes into the heat exchanger, then goes through the outer layer of the pipe to get to the thermal reactor.

It's not a simple pipe. I wish you the best of luck finding one!

Take a look at the thermal reactor to pipe gasket and you'll see what I mean - there are separate holes for the exhaust (going from TR to pipe) and the injected air (going through the outer layer of the pipe to the TR).

Don't even think of cat replacement pipes. The emissions system on '79 and '80 is NOTHING AT ALL like the '81-85 - no cat.

bah, I always forget about that part, what with living where there's no emissions and all... but couldn't he pass if he put an 81-85 manifold on, and a cat, and ran the hose directly from the air pump to the cat?

No, because the emissions work entirely differently.

I have an intact thermal resctor and pipe from my '80 but the asking price is obscene. I'm sure he could locate one locally cheaper.

The part you are talking about is called a "headpipe". It's a very complex part with dual walls, dual pipes, feed-back tubes/holes, etc.

At the price (Mazda OEM), I'd sure say look at ANY alternatives.

There is a boneyard here that has an 80 model (my old parts car) and it still has the entire exhaust (thermal reactor to the muffler) it is rusted in the rear of the car but the front pieces didnt look too bad. I could give them a call to check the price if your interested. Ill send it to you for my cost plus shipping.

They said no one has touched the car, but I have to go out tomarrow at lunch to see if the part is still there (lazy asses) and get the price so Ill post tomarrow afternoon (be perpared for the shipping to cost more than the part (crosses fingers)
