Here's a final update, then I'll let this thread die.

The clutch kit was a "Race Concepts 83-92 RX-7 NT Stage 2" that he bought on eBay for $139.99 so I'd say there's no chance he's gonna get a refund.

Luckily, I saved the "old" clutch disc and pressure plate and they exhibit no signs of wear. (He just bought new 'cause he thought it was a good idea - not knowing the history of the car). The flywheel also looked great, so...yeah, you guessed it, I put the old stuff back on. No more shudder. Smoooothe.

Thanks for all the help!

Lesson learned on things to check:
1. Drive shaft out of balance
2. Drive shaft bolts loose or missing or unmatched
3. Front u-joints bad
4. Rear u-joints bad
5. Clutch pressure plate bolts loose
6. Wheel lugs loose
7. Bad wheel bearings
8. Tranny mount bad
9. Clutch master/slave bad/leaking
10. Alignment
11. Differential is shot
12. Tranny is shot
13. Flywheel is shot
14. Tranny/diffy fluid is shot
15. Bad karma
16. "Clutch is toast". Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner!

Glad to see you still have your sense of humour about you after your adventure. I have to admit I was expecting the clutch, flywheel and pp to be burnt/gauled, not in pieces.

Nice trouble shooting check list. #15 is one of my favorites.

Hrm... That doesn't bode well for me. I was planning to buy one of those. Do let us know how the refund process goes.
