Temp Skyrocketed

Hi guys i have a 83 gsl and its not starting on me anymore....it all started two days ago when i changed the battery cables because i was having problems with the starter.....after changing the battery i took it for a drive and after five min. the temperature flew up but i didnt let it get to hot.....i got to work and check the coolant and it was perty low.....so i filled it up and let it set for about six hours.....i come back it started up no problem and headed home and again the temperature went up and this time my lights began to get dime and the volts fell to 8-9.......as soon as i got it home i parked it and waited till the morning to started it again......i tried starting it and it cranks but it wont start......it sounds like it wants to but nothing......so far i checked for spark, if it was flooded, a bad connection, andthe battery......but i cant find the problem.....i need help

My mechanic was always saying the worst thing you can do to a rotary is let it run hot. Once is all it takes. Good luck.

thermostat no open and /or radiator all blocked, then hose to the radiator no hot and coolant no flow (remove the radiator cap when before starting and check for flow). I've cooked my old engine several times, it gave out like ten years later.

check you spark plugs for fouling(black carbon deposits), or fuel starvation(red insulators) or happy plugs ( nice brown to tan insulators like a babe on the beach)

apex seals usually die one at a time, the engine can run on one rotor. power will suck though

thermostat is on top of the engine block, right before the upper radiator return hose.

Sounds like a fanbelt to me......
Anytime you have cooling and charging issues at the same time, its almost certainly related to the fanbelt. One belt simultaneously runs the alternator and waterpump/fan.If that belt slips or breaks, your gonna have immediate problems.Even if you still run the smogpump, that belt has only limited grab on the waterpump pulley. It will slip when the fan gets going and youll overheat.

Sounds to me like the first time out,the waterpump was slipping and the alternator was not working. You were running on battery power, but everything seemed OK since your battery was fully charged.By the second trip, the battery was weak which caused the loss of power and dim headlights.
After that trip, your battery no longer has enough juice to even fire the engine, and your likely flooded out now.
Check for a seized alternator and/or a very loose alternator belt.If the belt is in good condition and not loose, and the alt. isnt seized, charge the battery, get the engine running and check your alt. output with a multimeter,or remove it an have a shop bench test it.
