temp sensor

ok my temp guage broke and i think it is the sensor/sending unit whatever thingamabob. anyway, i drive an 83 gsl and the only thing ive found resembling a temp sensor is in the top of the radiator. is this the only one/ the correct one? i went to o'rileys and thay ordered the sensor but it was 1 small brass pc and mine is a larger plastic pc with a 3or 4 inch wire attached that plugs into a ?brown? and blue wire. pls tell me if this is the correct thing and if so what is the correct name or year model thay usd the plastic one.

The sensor on top of the radiator is the water level sensor not the temp sensor. The water temp sensor is located just below and to the left of the oil filter. It looks like a tiny spark plug. It sounds like you have the right part.
