It doesn't control the choke. Here's a pic of its location:

The temp gauge sender is separate from the choke system. The choke uses a temperature switch in the back of the water pump housing. The sender for the coolant temperature is on the driver’s side next to the oil pressure sender. The oil pressure sender is that brass colored mushroom looking thing sticking out of the side of the engine just below the oil filter. The water temp sender is just to the left of it with a single wire coming out. It may have just become unplugged.

well i must have a one of a kind car then......my choke unit is on top of the radiator in the middle, and the temp gauge unit is at the bottom driver side corner of the radiator.....i know this because they were both unhooked when i got the car and the gauge didnt work and the choke didnt kick off, but when i hooked the top one up the choke immediately kicked off, and when i hooked the bottom one up my gauge started working

That shouldn't be. The sensor in the top of the radiator is the coolant level sensor and the one in the bottom of the radiator is a temperature switch (used mainly for emmisions, I think).

Must have been coincedence that the choke kicke off at the same time.

The single wire sensor on top of the radiator controls the low coolant light.
The sensor at the bottom of the radiator controls the smog system when the engine is warming up.
The 2 wire sensor on the back of the thermostat housing controls the choke pull magnet in the dashboard.
The single wire sensor below the oil filter controls the temp gauge.

Unless you have a shorted harness or someone seriously F-ed' with the car, none of theses sensors should be affecting each other's controlled systems.

Yeah, unfortunately a useless engine right now, rear rotor bearing spun. It's torn apart right now. But will be put back together in a few days. Then it'll be pretty AND alive.
