Let's see...it's been a while since I did this. Put the car in gear so that the engine won't turn. Grab a hold of the fan with one hand (outer edge of blade) and use a 10mm wrench or ratchet with the other hand. Make sure that you are working on the bolt that is on the opposite side of the blade that you're holding (ie 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock) Push down on the blade and push down on the wrench in quick short spurts to work it lose. Even better, use an air ratchet if you've got one. On both of my '83's they were surprisingly easy to work off. There's no need to touch the rad at all.
For my block off plate I used a liquid gasket. Worked great.

so your talkin bout the nuts on the engine side of the fan i m takin rad out anyway for my new electric taurs fan for fitting purposes i was gonna cut a gasket out but liquaid gasket sounds for a better seal
Yup...the four bolts are on the engine side. My e-fan is mounted on the nose side of the rad. I couldn't get the motor to clear the water pump pulley. I'm happy with the final look...nice big gap between the rad and the front of the engine without any large shroud in the way. I mounted the relay in front of the original battery tray.

Remove fan, remove extension, use oil pan bolts to bolt the pulley back on.
Front mounting a pusher fan is not a good idea if it has a shroud, blocks too much air flow. A shrouded puller fan on the back side is the most effective option.

Yeah, the original bolts with some washers worked just fine for me. My fan is a Taurus fan mounted on the front of the rad. I've had no heating/cooling problems whatsoever.
