T2 owner qs about 1gs

Hi everyone. I own a 87 T2 right now and was rear ended by an suv. Im pretty sure its going to be totaled but the drive line and everthing else on the car are in good shape. The car drives fine just has rear frame trunk/quarter panel damage. I was thinking of taking the money I get to fix it and jsut find a decent bodies 1st gen with a blown motor and swap in the 13 b. I want to know what all I will have to change and hang onto from my t2. The wiring harness, ecu and motor are a given. Will the stock TMIC fit on the car or will I need to use a custom FMIC setup. Also will I need the tranny/flywheel/diff and axles or will the motor bolt up to the stock FB tranny?? Will the engine bolt to the stock engine mounts?? And even if it will can it take the abuse from a semi modded 13BT?? It currently has an safc II intake, tid, 3 inch exhaust, turbo timer, intake, no p/s or a/c or ap and probably makes 230 hp. Well If you guys can help me out it would be great. thank you

There are at least several members here running the 3rd Gen 13B-REW engine in the 1st Gen body, so that should give you some confidence that it can be done.

I know that there was a topic here awhile back about a T2 swap into a stocker 12a chassis - this would probably be good reading for you. Search on T2 swap for more info.

Some things that are a given are that the 2nd Gen cars uses a different engine mounting system than 1st Gen. If you get an SE front cover (13b-N/A) it will hold the 13b front engine mount bracket. Tranny will be different - you need an 'SE' tranny from an 84/85 SE to get the right shifter location and gear ratios for the final drive. Also, 1st Gen's have live axle rear vs. your IRS on 2nd Gens. The hood on 1st Gens have no provision for TMIC, but you could fab something for that. Your T2 has electric injection oil pump vs 1st Gen eccentric shaft geared pump. You'd probably want to make this swap into an SE chassis, so you get the bigger brakes (vented F+R), LSD, EFI fuel tank and pump, etc.

Good luck, it sounds like a project borne out of necessity. Sorry to hear about your T2, but welcome to the forum,

well my tII swap is almost completed and heres what i have to say:
1.The TMIC will not fit so i just bought a stock third gen one and moved it to the front.

2.I used the TII tranny but didnt check to see if the stock first gen would fit. If you use the TII tranny then you need to get a custom driveshaft made.

3. I used the stock first gen rear end, but im pretty sure that you need toupgrade the diff. I heard that the miata ones are a good upgrade.

4. The motor wont bolt into the stock mounts so you can either switch the front cover and some other things(dont know much about it, but im sure someone else will explain), or i just made some custom mountsout of 1/4 steel. Ill try to post some pics when i can.

5. I sure hope that it can handle that since ill hopefully have alittle over 300 when im done. Ive seen some first gens with alot more power than that so it should be able to handle it if you treat right

So if I find an se body then I could mostly swap it over with the tranny custom driveshaft and some customer motor mounts?? How hard is the wiring rotary rude?? And what mods will you be running?? if this job ends up being too hard I may find a FC chassis non turbo and make the swap.

Well i bought a haltech E6K rather than trying to wire in the stock TII ecu so i dont really know how hard it is. With the haltech its very simple.

Right now i have a large streetport, exhuast, intake, Haltech, light flywheel and driveshaft, all emisions removed(thinking about running premix), boost controller, BOV, 3rd gen intercooler and radiator(because someone stole the TII rad. when i was at college), Electric fan, turbo timer, probobly somemore stuff i forgot.
What im looking to get know is some bigger injectors, better intercooler, some magnecor wires, the list gos on and on.......

The stock TMIC will fit under the FB hood,I ran mine for years with a small slat cut in the hood to direct air to the intercooler. That isnt to say the stock TMIC is worth a sh*t,but itll do for a while until you decide to fab up a FMIC.On an average temp day, figure 2 runs through the gears and the FMIC is heat soaked. If you just drag race or drive, and dont do any continuous road race-type thrashing, itll be fine.

The 86-88 FCs had a standard 4 tube mechanical oil metering pump, just like the SE,so you can bolt right up to an SE front cover. The 89-91 (S5) and FD had the electronic OMP.

Dont bother with a non-turbo tranny,it wont hold up for long. The TII box is good for twice the torque a stock TII engine puts out.You have a known, good TII tranny,so use it.Moving the shifter up and having a driveline made is not hard.

The FB rearend will hold up if you dont beat on it.Mine has survived a 300hp daily driven TII engine for almost 4 years. Its just now starting to howl after all this time, and it already had 100,000 miles on it when I put her in.

Do a search, its all been covered before, much of it in the last week or two.And you can always ask specific questions as the project comes along.I will say this, get a factory service manual if you decide to run the factory EFI.Itll make the whole thing MUCH easier.Ive done both the S4 and S5 TII swaps in my car and the FSM cant be beat for electrical scematics and flow charts.
And also, having a complete car to scavenge from is a BIG,BIG plus.Youll have no worries since you can get everything you need the first time, right out of your own car.

I've had an S5 engine swapped into my 82. If you're near Denver PM me and maybe you can come and take a look at it.

Been there, done that!

Fully read this thread https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=255020

Try to get a GSL-SE as your swap will be much easier, 2nd choice would be an 84-85 GSL, 3rd choice any other 84-85.

IMHO it's worth paying a little more for the SE here's why:
1) front cover and mounting bracket
2) oil pan
3) front mounted oil cooler
4) wiring suitable to be swapped over to T2 EFI
5) already has high pressure fuel lines and are bigger
6) better brakes front and rear
7) use the 680 cc injectors in your T2
8) T2 ECU mounts right in (though it may also on the 12a's--don't know for sure)
9) SE transmission shifter mounts up to the T2 tranny (see my thread)
10) I've posted ALL the schematics you need to do the swap--but yea you still need to have some basic electronics capability: reading schematics + FSM, soldering, etc.

The TMIC will fit up and you can find fiberglass hoods for an FB with the T2 hoodscoop. IMHO it's much better to get a FMIC.

I imagine the S1/S2 cars can be done with a little extra effort and a few more parts.

Assuming you have a good running engine, you can easily do this for under $2k and maybe even $1500. Most of it will depend on your upgrades, totally stock T2 would be the cheapest route.

HTH,

Scott

p.s. I'll be glad to help out more, just be respectful--search the forum and read up everything you can--you'll see there are many variations of this swap and mine was just one of them.

Ok thanks for all the information everyone. I would def try for a gsl-se so this will be as easy as possible and luckly I have the whole car to pull parts from. I also think it would be best to run an fmic. Do you think I can use my turbo back 3 iinch exhaust on an fb??

If its a single exhaust then it could fit but your going to have to bend it to make it fit over or under the rearend

you should be able to take it to a muffler shop or something and have them bend it for you
