to swap or not to swap...

ok I got a rx-7...and I am trying to decide on motor, interior, and body..(motor comes first)

So I have a 327-SJ...I want to put that in it but I kinda want to build up the 13B...200rwhp will get me into the 13's(I'm still learning to drive)....your guys' thought's...

I think that I can get 400hp with the buildup I have planned for the sbc but I still would like some outside ideas...

what do you guy's think as far as new seats...I dont want to spend more than 600 for the pair...

thanks-E-

not nessisarily, i think it's easier to gain power outa rotary engine, porting can go along ways. take my case for instance. i bought a 84 gsl-se with a blown motor, i swaped to a 88 n/a 13. built a custom intake using a sewer adapter i found at menards. used the first gen ignition and engine mounting. i resently bought a RB header and put a straight back on it. i'm buying a SDS fuel manager. the next step is find the turbo II manifolds and innercooler for a low psi turbo. i should hit 300 hp easy, i'm hoping for 350 and i have been told runing 12-14psi would make unussual wear in my engine but i could hit 400hp.

i based my decision on a few things, a)cost vs gain in power. b)weight, c)compatability.
a) was easy to answere, the v-8 would cost less to gain power
b) the v-8 i heavier so it dissrupts the weight dissribution of the rx-7 and ruins the handeling unless you can get a new suspenion and even at that you have the problem of getting the power to the ground. and sense the front end will be heavier with the v-8 there will be less down force in the back to help the traction. also look into the power curves. the rotory engine have **** tons of high end low mids but not a lot of lows. v-8 has lots of low and mids not a hole lot of high end. i think thats a big reason why a rotory powered car can hav 400 hp and still grip off the line, and the fact the the weight tranfer on a rx7 is extremly good.

c) you will have the problem of geting a trani, drive shaft, and mounting, re-wiring the engine bay.

so all said and done, the v-8 is easier to gain power off of but in the cost of putting it into the car.... the rotory engine is the way to go for power and cost.

It really depends on what stuff you got for the sbc. The prices may balance out to be equal with all the stuff you have to do to make your V-8 work. You must look at all the wiring, the ignition module, the relays and not to mention cutting and welding you have to do. The firewall may not have to be touched, I know it didn't in my case. Like another member said, you have to worry about getting the power to the ground, and if your running 400 ponies, your also going to have to worry about frame twist. It really depends on how much time and effort you want to put into the car, we spent 6 months just getting the engine in and running and another 3 to tweak everything so it all looks stock. So it doesn't matter what everyone else says, its only their opinion, it all comes down to what you want to do. Good luck with whichever your going to do though.

1) don't have to worry about wiring..carbed...mmm

2) granny's makes the complete kit with rad, mounts, drive shaft,exc..exc...

3) true rotory is an addiction but I need to know what is like to own a 2300lbs 400whp/385wtq car...and it makes that power at 6500 and the torque at like 3000 with a flaaat line...

4) what I will most likely end up doing is pulling the 13b and working it over...to later put it in to a rex or an olp rotory car(rx-3???I liked those the first time I laid eyes on'em

5)now when I get a response back from this tranny guy i will know if I can put a t5 on the 327....fingers crossed...or I can get a t400 and save up for the t56 out of an ellis camaro...

with that out of the way...what do you think as far as a irs rear for the thing...plus the 327 is only 75-100lbs heavier and with aluminium heads and other stuff to drop weight...

Think the v-8 will forever ruin your handling? Daryl Evans's ZZ4 powered RX-7 solo car was last years local, regional and Canadian Western Champion in E Mod.
so that is enough sai dfor the handleing...considering it will be my track car and monthly driver....

thanx again-E-
