There are downsides to everything. Its a world of compromise, what are you willing to accept?

Turbos are usually more efficient at compressing the intake charge, which usually translates to more boost, or lower intake temps. Intercoolers can take the most of the brunt of the ineffieciency, so with a good IC on either more power can be expected, as will be the ability to run more boost.

Superchargers being directly linked to the e-shaft are more efficiently coupled to the throttle (read less-lag, low boost threshold), where turbos take some time to come up to speed as more and more exhaust energy hits the turbine.

Which is better....continues to be debated, especially when it comes to a street car, although historically superchargers have been replaced in racing by turbos. Ultimately becuase turbos has very little parisitic loss (aka takes mostly otherwise wasted exhaust energy), and can produce very high boost with very little added weight.

I have a supercharger on my old car. I used a supercharger for a few reasons-cost,ease of installation, the low torque we already have at low rpms, and the engine I am using does not have any fuel injection. If you want the most horse power you can not beat a turbo. I am currently running the Atkins Rotary supercharger and you can see my car on their web site-Gordon

Supercharge a V8, turbocharge a rotary.

no...something else to think about.....the e-shaft front snout bearing was never designed to see the high loads imparted by a supercharger belt, especially the v type belt...

All Superchargers are often called blowers, but more accuratly, blowers are a type of supercharger known as a centrifugal supercharger. It works basically like a turbocharger, but belt driven instead of exhaust powered. Basically they just "blow" the air into the engine.
The other major type of superchager is a positive-displacement SC, such as the Atkins unit, which uses twin screws to push the air in, much like a pump.

The Atkins kit isn't bad, and is actually a pretty decent value. Personally I've been slowly working on a custom FI setup using a Magnuson/Eaton supercharger (which is more effecient than the Atkins).
The custom route is expensive tho, and my project is actually on hold now that I have a baby on the way...

naw, too much expense! $2,500 give or two a hundred plus a new carb and after a couple hours of installation your rolling. A turbo alone is very expensive, plus I would need to mod my carbs or get efi, fuel management system, intercooler. Not to mention a new air intake, and a new header. With the accopamined baggage of an turbo, I would estimate the turbo would cost at LEAST $3,500 or better. If anyone out there has done a turbo swap I would greatly appreciate any numbers on the cost of a the WHOLE setup.

A roots-type supercharger is also known as a blower...and no, it's not named after Alan Root although he is infamous in the Ford circle for his blown shotgun mountain motor fords in T-buckets....
