Supercharged SA project

I thought some of you would be interested in seeing pics of a project we are working on. It is a super clean 80 SA, that our customer had been stockpiling upgrade parts for. He is stationed in Korea but flew over and dropped his car off at the shop late last fall. There are few small things yet to do in the engine, like red plug wires, repaint the blue band on the alt etc, then we will start on the a custom interior....

The entire project can be viewed here ..

Here is a pic..

Very cool! Do you sell those carb hats? I've been looking for one for my blown '85 with an S5 13B in it so I can put on a cold air intake.

It is currently a stock 12A, we did not rebuild the engine. No dyno numbers yet

Ouch! Mannnnnnn I took that gamble too and blew it up in a day....I hate to tell you but that carb hat probably won't work. You're gonna find that it'll fall on it's face after maybe 6000 rpm where a 14" drop base air filter will keep flowing. Been there, tried that with a bigger hat, bigger filter and shorter pipe..Congrats on the project hough. Take it easy on the motor and keep her together.

PS, I like the fact you're running a big pulley on the charger (compare it to 64mg's pic) to reduce heat and keep boost down a little on the stocker, great choice!

Excellent carb choice btw...if your carb hat doesn't work the triangle air filter pictured here won't either.

We had discussed rebuilding and porting it, but people have budgets.....

We will try out the carbhat CAI, if it doesn't work we will figure out something different. Just trying to get some cool air into the SC, they run hot enough without sucking in the preheated engine bay air.

I hope that is atleast a motor that has been rebuilt recently with strong seals.
Because if it is not then the budget will go out of the window when the motor blows. And blow it will.

When mine blew it blew an apex and ruined the rotor and housing $$$$$... Look at your s/c pulley and let us know what # is on it. I recommend a 6 or 5. 7,8 or higher will be toooo much boost. And for the record, both Dan and Andy from Atkins urgerd me to rebuild before putting the charger on, it was "my" gamble.

I know what damaged engines look like, I build between 5-10 a month. My customer told me the engine was relatively new, how new he did not know. He is prepared for the inevitable engine failure, then we will rebuild and port it. It was not my choice to do it this way, I always feel it is better to have a fresh rebuilt, streetported engine, it gives you a sturdy foundation to build on.

I'm running a large pulley on mine so far (I think the one in the picture is a #7 and was on it when I bought it)...I think it's a #11, and it only pumps about 2 pounds of boost. The motor is fully broken in and I'm ready to go to a smaller pulley (although not as small as the #7)...I just haven't gotten around to doing it.

I could car less if he has built a billion motors. What I am looking at is sometimes garages/repair facilities are order takers. Meaning that someone comes in and states they are looking to have something done yet the repair shop does not inform them of the consequences that may happen. They are just interested in getting the $.

I'm not stating that this is the case here and if they have advised the person paying the bill what can and will happen then it's that person paying the bill to decide if they are willing to take the gamble.

We put together staged modification plans for people every day, to avoid catastophic failure. We have also turned people away that just wanted to install a single turbo on their FD without any of the supporting mods. Sorry to hear you have had such bad luck with your local shops, but any of our customers will tell you that we try to educate them on the decision they are making and the cost associated prior to doing any upgrades.

I must have had my numbers backwards...I was thinking the larger the number, the lower the boost (so, bigger the pulley). I must have had a #11 on it when I bought it, and switched to a #7. Either way, the one I have on it now is too big and I get very little boost.
