Super-cheap GSL-SE rear suspension upgrades?

I'm going to buy a 1984 GSL-SE that could probably use new shocks in the rear, and possibly springs. What are some brands and models of shocks and springs that are stiffer and more responsive than stock, but not much more expensive?

Used ones would be not much more expensive.

monroe sensatrac.
I have them on mine. Their stiff, but could be better. They automatically stiffen during harder driving, so you still retain some comfort when cruisin. Although don't expect them to get alot stiffer. I geuss with some good springs they'd work well. Anyways they're cheap too

i have read in grassroots motorssports magazine that the rear independant suspension from a miata will almost bolt right on to the first gen rx-7.

^ but it wouldn't be cheap.......

Tokico Blues (also called HPs) are a good and relatively inexpensive upgrade to your shocks. You can find them on ebay for around $160.

Springs will depend on what you want out of suspension (aka what do you want it to do?) Cruising, aggressive/street or race. A quick search will help resolve your questions!
