Thumbs up Subwoofer . . .yeahhhhh!

Just finished installing a Kenwood KSC-SW1 subwoofer. I wanted to keep the Clarion head unit, joystick, amps etc. so I thought this might be a good addition. A little leery at first because of its size. Put it in a great spot. I removed the drivers side bin and used the top of the bin for a template on a 3/4" piece of plywood. I covered it with a piece of carpet I had left from when I bought a new rear deck mat. All the wiring goes through a hole in the bottom, and since the rear amp and speaker wires are right there, it was an easy hook up.I did have to get inside the amp to splice into a wire that would turn the subwoofer on when the radio was turned on. To me it is the perfect size for the RX7 and adds just the right amount of base. And since the whole thing mounts using the original holes the bin screwed to, I could replace the bin at any time.

I will try to take some tomorrow and get them posted. I'm also thinking of getting an FM modulated CD changer and mounting it the same way where the passenger side bin is located.

Thumbs up

Here are some pics of the subwoofer. Sorry about so many, but trying to get it in different lighting. As you can see, I put the controller in the center storage. Another great thing about this location is that with the seat back, you can feel the vibration through the seat which gives it that little extra!

Here are some pics of how I attached it. It comes with mounting plates for a horzontal mount. Normally, they would extend outward so you would attach them to the bottom of the subwoofer, and just screw them to the board it is being mounted on. I reversed them so they go inward and put bolts through the plates before attaching it to the subwoofer, which in turn I put through holes I drilled in the wood. This was possible because the metal mounting plates are not totally flat. One edge is higher than the other so the bolt heads would fit between the plate and the bottom of the subwoofer.

looks good, looks exactly like my interior. Now you just need a new head unit so your not rocking the CD-tape converter.

Thank you for the comment. This sub is not going to shatter windows, but for the size of car the RX is, I think it sounds great (but I am definitely not of the younger generation though). I wanted to keep the Clarion setup because I like the look with the lighted equalizer and all. I did put two new 6 1/2s in the rear. You could mount it in the rear, but it does need to be mounted to a board (at least according to the instructions). I preferred where I put it for the ease of wiring, and the fact that I can also "feel" it through the seat back.

I like it! It is a lil thicker then I expected, but I think I can deal with it.

And my gosh man the red interior is so mint, im uber jealous! I see you had to do the lil hinge trick on the center console too!

You noticed!!! (the little hinge trick, I mean). As far as the thickness, I decided to use 3/4" plywood, mainly so I would have something thick enough to put the carpet around. Actually the I think the instructions said to mount on aboard at least 2cm thick, and that's pretty close to 3/4". The interior is probable the main reason I decided to spruce the car up. There are no tears in the seats and no fading on the rest of the interior (always in a carport out of the sun). I ordered a new back deck carpet and got another yard of the same carpet material so I could also make a new carpet piece that hangs under the hatch opening. The original stuff Mazda used was really crap!!.
