Subwoofer in the pocket?

Anyone use the compartments for subs?

Trying to be visually discreet.

Now c'mon guys! Do you think I would just start posting without searching?!

Seriously, I didn't search before I posted; but I have since. NADA.

I know that I read somewhere (different site) about converting the "pockets" to enclosures and using the lids, with a modification, as the grill.

I have two 8"s in the compartment behind my seat. I cut a 3/4 inch pice of plywood the same size as the lid. I used that expanding foam to seal the compartment and bolted the new lid with the speakers right over it. My amp is hiding in the other compartment with the wires running between them. Of course this is permanent thing but its worth it if your looking to hide it.

There's a novel and a novella of a thread lurking somewhere in the forum database, I forgot what the titles are. They've been posted many a times though.

search for "check out my sub box" and "subs hatch are you down"

Right on!

these ARE 10 inch subwoofers. I don't think 12 inch subwoofers would fit in. what the guy did is that he drilled two big holes through the metal, put it some wood(not too much to gain too much weight but enough to make sure the I won't hear any rattle)

They're 400 watt peak 200 watt RMS 10' Clarion Subwoofers powered by a 200 watt Peak Amplifier(100 watt to each subs) and if you're wondering why I didn't get a more powerful amp is that I've got my HU set to -1(for the subs) and it can go all the way to plus 8 but since I've got the subs right in back of me, I need to keep it low or else I'll be deaf in a year. The speakers(10 of them), though, are powered by a 400 Watt amp. If u guys got anymore questions feel free to post.

I thought about doing the custom speaker thing, but didn't want to fuss with it.

Now that I have seen what it can look like, I think I will do it.

Very nice Rex79!

Thanks!

With a little help I might actually try and do it myself, but I am pretty mechanically/ electrically challenged.

But I figure I might as well try and learn something if I am going to spend the money anyway.

I want to put one eight inch square l7 kicker in my compartment. My bro has one in his mx-6 and it's louder than the two 10" audiobahn's he had. And i figured it would be easier since it's already square. I have tools in my other compartment (just in case). I also have in amp in the compartment i want to put the sub in but i figured i would angle mount it inbetween the compartments and have a port blowin on it to kinda cool it off. I plan on purchasing a Harrison-labs amp because they are tiny and put out awesome power. Well, thats my plans, won't be a will till i see it cuz i can't buy anything for my car until i have a license. Later

Thanks BrownMound. Novel and Novella made up my mind not to use compartments. I had an '83 back in '89 and put a box in facing forward w/ 2 10's. It was up against the rail. I'm sure that I was getting cancellation because it did sound better with the hatch open.

I think I'll go with 2 high end (Eclipse) 8's in the very back. Nice ideas in previous threads.

Great color car. Dark brown is my fav. Currently have Gold/Bronze. Not my favorite but pretty unique.

Thanks again.

brison, just for arguments sake... i had 2 JBL 10's in my old SE in a ported box right behind the seat. it was butted up against the rail. it DID NOT have bass waves cancelling themselves out. however, the subs and ports were facing BACKWARDS. with the hatch open, it sounded so-so... when closed, it sounded AMAZING! i won a $20 bet because some guy swore i was hiding 12's or 15's in there somewhere... all that bass couldn't be from those 2 10's. i let him peek everywhere in my car... and he actually coughed up the $20. go figure!

I want to do a box, but I just might as well put a sign by the car that says "steal me!"

How would you go about making the boxes not so obvious in 1stgens?

You're right, 2 10's can do alot. These cars are so small that if you have efficient speakers and a decent amp, you'll get plenty of bass.

However, being visually discreet and attaining quality sound (not just pound the ground) is a little more difficult.
