What's a good dye?

I have a the brown dash and interior in my 81 RX-7 and I was thinking about dying it black. What is a good durable dye finish I could use, and where can I buy it?

I've used Fiebing's black leather dye to re-blacken my sun-faded interior parts and it worked well, perhaps it would work for changing the color of an interior as well.
You could try it on the back side of a panel to see if it would work to your satisfaction. You may have better results dyeing a brown part blue first, then black. Fiebing's leather dye can be found at leathercraft supply stores or online. The part will need to be prepped first by degreasing it with alcohol, and if armor all was ever used on the part, you may need to do this a couple of times to get rid of all the silicone which penetrates the surface of the plastic or rubber. The good thing about the leather dye is that it LASTS, unlike some of the vinyl paints, which can chip or flake off in time.

I've used some vinyl paint on my '82 and the key is multiple coats. Even then, however, the plastic you are coloring has been sun-faded (presumably) and will scartch easily, revealing the old color underneath. I've seen some success with car paint, which will not only color your hard plastic interior components, but give them a glossy finish.

go to any sherwin williams or any other reputable auto paint shop and get a can of SEM vinyl and plastic dye. bunches of colors for all different manufacturers. we use that stuff in the car audio/mobile media business. works great and damn near colormatch. i've used it on all my cars and it works ... especially on the burgandy with the notorious green look after fading.
