stupid people + rotaries = funny story

this might be more aptly suited for the lounge, but....

jorx81 and i go into town to get some hoses and clamps for my engine swap. to begin with, i ask the fellow working if he has the clutch line from the slave cylinder for an 83 rx7, and he informs me that he doesnt have it, and cant get it. he then says, "i take it you're working on an rx7." so then, we get the hose, and ask for 5/16" hose clamps. he responds, "by 5/16", do you mean clamps you tighten with a 5/16" socket?" we go on to inform him they are needed to fit 5/16" hoses. when he takes it up to the register and starts looking up the prices, joe asks him to see if he can get a price for a piston kit for the same car. despite our snickers, he looks for it. "cant get that one either. good luck finding it." i say, "well, hopefully i wont need a piston kit anytime soon." he says, "well, it IS a mazda. youll probably need it before too long."

who would have imagined such comic relief at autozone?

Since you had asked for a clutch line to the slave cylinder, perhaps he thought you were referring to the slave cylinder piston. They are known to wear out on RX-7s, and he would have been accurate to speculate that you would probably need it eventually.

I didn't think he was really going to look it up. Most of the guys down there aren't too bad, but this guy..... Anyway we were snickering and he said we were comedians or just stoned, I never told him which.

I just saw this and found it funny. I **** with people the other way around at work (Advance Auto Parts). When they ask me a question concerning valves, lifters, pistons, etc, I just look at them like "Dude i don't know, my car doesn't have them" Then they ask "what do you drive" reply: "Mazda RX-7, it has a rotary".....retort-"thats those funny little car with the helicopter engines.....right?"

I feel bad, but ****'em for being ignorant.

What chipset is in the computer you are using now?
What motors are in your refridgerator?
How does your TV work - in detail?

Most of the Autozone/Kragen (Schucks, Checker) guys are near minimum wage backyard mechanics... they use the computer to look up parts, a ASE masters in parts isn't necessary for the job.

Besides, there are plenty of people on this board that don't know **** about cars, even the RX7s that they drive.

So give the guys a break... the parts stores sell mostly alternators and brake pads... a specific knowledge of vehicles isn't necessary. Besides... its more fun to **** with the salespeople at dealerships.

Oh, and before anyone says it... I don't and never have worked at a parts store... but I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

^^Good post. What's the ratio of rotaries to reciprocating? Probably less than the ratio of Macs to Windows machines. How many of you would know jack squat about opening a web browser on a Mac? Would it matter if you didn't?

I wouldn't admit to knowing anything about a Sunfire.
