Angry Stuck Choke ****.

I searched and couldn't find the answer to my problem. Another person asked about a year ago, but no reply.

So, my choke was working fine when I put my new carb on. I go out one day, pull the choke and it won't budge. The cable is free and the choke works on the carb. I have narrowed it down to the **** inside the car. Are there any mechanisms that could have frozen up on me? It didn't feel stiff at all before it stoped working either. Any ideas?

I've dealt with it for a month now, but sitting in the car and holding the engine at 2000 rpm with the pedal gets old REAL quick. I'm tired of doing that. I just want to set the choke and be done with it.

isn't there a separate fuse for the choke on the mechanism itself?

Would blowing that fuse jamb up the choke though? It sorta makes sense. The choke got stuck after I accidentally shorted something out while trying to wire my head unit and amp up. I can't really see the mechanism though. It'll be a PITA to change that fuse if thats the case. I'm surprised sterling or rx7carl haven't chimed in on this yet. I thought they might know.

... this won't be an expert opinion at all...

If you didn't know, there's a magnet that holds the choke open and is electrically released when the engine reaches a certain tempature. That magnet is in a black box behind the dash.

I suppose it could get stuck "on", possibly by current running through it constantly.

Does it move with the ignition off?

... also, you can reach up under the dash and disconnect the choke box (there's a small pigtail connector that runs from the box) and see if that releases your cable.

Obviously, if it doesn't, then it's not the magnet.

Its stuck in the "off" possition. Doesn't move no matter what I do. It doesn't feel like its the cable getting cought up. The choke lever is free on the carb. The only thing it could be is that magnet. Is it possible that it could hold the choke **** in?

Bingo! We have a winner. The cable is probably failing. And they arent cheap. I bought one a few years ago.

But it doesn't feel like the cable is binding. It worked perfectly untill one day shortly after I accidentally shorted a few things out. After the catastrophy (bad short that fried my cruise control), it just didn't want to budge any more. I wanna get this fixed, but I don't want to spend too much on it. Its just feeking anoying having to mess with the throttle untill it warms up.

Well you could try disconnecting the connector for the magnet, but I've never seen that magnet be strong enough to keep you from moving the cable. You want my theory? When you had your electrical short, somehow you had current going thru the cable, heating it up and welding it to the sheath internally. Someone had this happen not laong ago, but with their throttle cable.

I had mine seize, and ended up tearing the **** away from the wire (dumbass muscle man style).

Anyway, I posted a WTB in the Parts forum - I ended up buying one for $30 from either Mazda Recycling (CA) or Atlanta RX7, I can't remember...

It's a pretty easy install.

I took the **** and cable out of the car. I was partially right. The magnet was holding the rod inside the box. On top of that, the cable was also screwed up. So it is possible for the magnet to hold the choked off.

Damn do i feel stupid, i had the same problem, i reached down to pull the choke today to try to start the car, and it wouldnt budge. My brother pointed out that i probably mixed up the lines when i was putting my new carburetor in. Sure enough, i mixed 2 of them up, so i switched them, and....VIOLA! The choke pulls just fine, now i need to figure out why my damn carburetor isnt gettin fuel....
