And here's the qualifier question that can act like a crystal ball to answer what route your state government will pursue....can you get a CHL permit in your state? If no, then they will ban the car....
with some careful tuning and a summit high flow cat (Catco 2.5 inlet outlet) I passed smog in DC with no problems. car is still loud, but mellow loud. no visible smoke either. I used some marvins mystery oil about a week before the test, drove the **** out of the car and let it idle forever.

Regarding "every county in CA getting biannual smog" I don't think thats true. The new law passed late last year that kicked in 1/1/2003 just added the SF Bay Area to the Smog II program (dyno). There was no mention of adding the non-smog counties. See press release in ca.gov website. But, I'm sure the days are numbered until the entire state goes smog. Look at all the money the bureaucrats are missing out on.
Smog in CA
Hi everyone,
It is time to smog for my 79 FA. I have a open header and lost all of the air pump, thermal reactor, etc. So I have no way to put those emission junk back on the car. I am thinking: 1)go to the junkyard find a 79, pull all the emission junk and put it on my car. (which will be pain in the butt and it is hard to find a FA) 2)have a muffler shop to weld on two cats after the open header's collector pipe.
What is your opinion on those two idea? I am kinda leaning toward [2] since it is the easiest but I am concerning if the cats will not be enough to lower the HC and CO reading. The car is register in the Bay Area and it is not at the Smog Enhanced area.
I have only couple of weeks left....any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

we have tested a few cars and we have found this:
stock, 0ppm low hc
no cat, everything else stock, 2000ppm @ idle
no cat no air pump; 3000ppm @idle
cat an no air pump: about 50ppm over the limit
you do have a lot of adjustablitly in the 79 carb so with just a cat you can probalbly get it to barely pass

So let say.....I install two cat after the open header....and I should pass the reading test right? What about the visual inspection? Because, I have no air pump. How is that going to work?
Thanks

So it seems like, I need to get the smog equipment back on. How hard is this going to be?
Does the air pump off a 13B going to work?
Since I have a header, then that means I need to pull a air pump, the exhaust manifold w/thermal reactor, piping after the reactor, and the AVC underneath the carb. from a junkyard? Anything else.
Man, that's pain in the butt.

No...you just need to get the air pump back on and get a 3-way cat welded on about 18" from your collector if you're running 26" primaries...call RP in Garland TX for the tech advice regarding the turbo surge valve and relay trick...
