strange experience in my rex

Yesterday I was driving the 200 miles back from a friends house in my '85 GSL. When I got onto the freeway I noticed a huge lack of power. I was barely able to maintain the 60mph speed limit. I kept driving for about 25 miles when I heard a small thump, and saw a burst of smoke come out the back of my exhaust. I immidiately regained all power after this. So I figure something was clogging my exhaust? Makes me wonder how much my exhaust is still clogged. Any thoughts?

Jesse

Yeah...Parts of the cats could be clogging it up, and then finally there was enough pressure to blow it out .

Ok, just checking . I would assume that it would only be louder if all of the crap in the cats blew out, which I think is highly unlikely.

I figured if it were louder it would be a sign of pieces coming apart inside the exhaust. Otherwise make a squirel crawled up in there. Just trying to help diagonse the problem!

I've got this idea to make a strait pipe to replace my cat. While I may get flamed by the smog ****'s here's my plan. I want to cut the flanges off my cat, and weld them to the ends of a strait piece of pipe and make a strait pipe out of it. Think this will work?

Yes. It should go right in. There aren't any hangers on the catalyst, so it should be easy as easy as bolting it on.

Definately sounds like a clogged cat. If the car was noticable quieter during the lack of power, then i would bet on it being the cat (or one of them). the problem is on the 1st gens is their unique exhaust with the "pre-cat" then the cat then the muffler. if i were you i would look into maybe replacing the cat(s) because as you said, it might not have cleared everything out.

It'll be louder than before of course.

But that will then allow you to dump the air pump and all the rat's nest.

Mine did the same thing...only it blew out a section of my exhaust and i gained 40hp after the muffler seperated itself.

When the exhaust blew out, immediately i though, damn, it needs to be louder! And than i removed my stereo, and anything that was too heavy so the power/weight ratio would stay down
