Straight Pipes

exactly how loud would straight pipes be, as compared to a v8 or some other piston engine?

Straight pipes on a rotary is almost intant deafness inside the car. Its louder than you think. Even with an aftermarket muffler such as a magnaflow, a rotary is louder than a V8 without an exhaust. The only piston engine car I could compare it too is a 1000 hp drag racer, if not louder than that.

I used to have a 13B sreetported 1st gen. The first time I fired over the motor it was without a muffler and pre-silencer, just headers. It was God-damn deafening.

I'm a racing beat fan. Good performance and good sound. However- it is not cheap.

i don't drive too fast, so performance isn't really a thing to me. everyone has told me that i can't use like a regular muffler cause it would burn it up. would it still burn it up if i don't race or anything like that?

I've only had two exhaust set-ups. Stock or Racing Beat. Just about everyone (including aftermarket shop guys) recommends RB or something equivalent. Everything else will burn or 'collapse' under the high temp exhaust of a rotary.

Yes- it's that hot.

well lets just say that since my muffler blew in two, my right ear has been ringing all day. Plus you have to yell to talk to anyone......It's a very frightening experience. It's damn loud.
Like a 747 flying behind you loud. When I idle, it's like a freight train going by.

I lost my exhaust on the expressway once (had a side pipe..) and had to drive about 30miles to get home. After that my ears were ringing for 3hours. The pre silencer is kind of a strait through glasspack (but not with glass as that will burn up) that is before the muffler.

I have a straight pipe going into a two chamber stainless steel muffler. Damn loud but not deafening. The muffler is similar to a flowmaster that a shop fabed for me so it won't burn up under the extream heat from a rotary.

Okay I need to add my 2 cents here. Yes everyone is right rotaries are freeking loud. Reason: the exhaust gas is still expanding as it enters the exhaust sytem where as a piston engine has already expanded after combustion and is being pushed out "dead" if you will by the piston. Anyway what I was going to add is the exhaust that I have on my car right now. I was on a budget so I will tell you how I did it. I was very surprised though, it sounds great and is not to loud yet has full flow-ability. My car is an 85 RX7 with a 12a (stock motor) so my car has an actual exhaust manifold as opposed to earlier RX7's with that thermal reactor thing. I took the exhaust manifold off and pulled out those little cups that sit insside of it to muffle the sound further then I put the manifold back on. From the flange of the manifold I had a 2.25 inch straight pipe made that feeds a Magnaflow canister style muffler with 2.5 inch inlet and 3 inch outlet, it's one of their higher quality stainless steel polished things. I've got a nice deep tone with a distinct rotary sound and the fact that I am using the stock manifold and not headers keeps it quiter than using headers. I mean alot quieter, likeyou wouldn't belive. It still gets loud above 3500 rpm's and lets you're motor make all the power it wants. I rev to about 9k rpm's when street racing, my carb is retuned tho. I don't recommend revving so high on a stock motor but I don't mind blowing up, and the dyno shows I'm still making power so it's cool for me.
My magnaflow cost about $180, the piping was about $35. I love it. It's cheap, kinda ghetto but it sounds great and works great.

Rotaries will fry out glass packs. I have personally burnt out brand new glass packs in a record time of 45 minutes, street driving aggresively, not racing. You need to use mufflers and silencers made of steel wool packing, fiberglass packing will only due for piston engines.

As many others have said about themselves, I have headers to strait pipe to one muffler -nothing else. I drive it every day on the street so its not that loud, but it is pretty loud. Heres a pic of the muffler i use ive had it on there for months with no problems..............yet

I have a cousin that runs a shop and does piping, he let me cut off my old muffler and then try everyone he had in stock, These were $100 and less mufflers, all sounded like crap, and had a ring to them. I picked up an RB muffler used and it sounds perfect, Nice and Quite compared to the cheep mufflers.

Buy the RB.

Now if you just have to have cheep, I have a Raptor That has 20 miles on it, We welded on a nice crome tip, it has a ring to it but that could just be because my car is SP and has a weber Carb. I spent $40 on it, Yours for $20.

Ryan.. the correct spelling is Straight*.. and also I had a Dynomax Turbo muffler on my car that lasted well for I would say a good 20,000kms, but thats all. Trust me, no exhaust on a rotary gets you IN SERIOUS **** with the cops. Ask me why..
Ears ringing? HELL YA.
