Straight pipe? How loud?

I've got a bone stock 83 GS... It's got a minor exhaust leak as it is, and I feel that the super restrictive stock system isn't exactly letting all the horses run free, either. If I get the RB header, how much/where could I get the rest of the piping for no cats/muffler?

Also, how loud will it be? I mean obviously I'm not going to intentionally be pegging off the limiter around any cops, but is a straight pipe streetable if you drive conservatively?

I'm in MN, if that helps anyone.

Most people would not like it. It's truly loud. Really really really loud. I've known a few who can stand a rotary with no muffling, but they are few and far between. I tell you, it's much louder than a straight piped piston engine. If you were to search "quiet exhaust" here on the forum search, you'd see that getting these bad boys quiet is quite difficult. Especially NA.

There are many many people who piece their own systems together, and only a few are satisfied.

An off the shelf racingbeat system gives a very good balance between power and noise, but it's pricey. Also more power is to be had with different gear.

You will find tons of threads saying something like "I have 3 mufflers on my car and it's still too loud for my taste!! What do I do??" So that might give you an idea what a straight pipe might be like.

get a racing beat collected header and their power pulse main muffler, and have a local muffler shop put some 2" pipe between them. it will be a little bit louder but nothing like ur average harley.

I, personally, wouldn't be bothered by an unmuffled rotary, I love the raw sound of engine exhaust, no matter how loud... Try standing next to a 1200+ horsepower tractor engine without an exhaust system!

What I want to know is, would I get away with streeting it? Or would I be getting fix it tickets from all the cops I cruise on by?

I'm running a RB header to straight pipe. When it was stock ported it was tolerable. I just rebuilt the engine a went with a Judge Ito Agressive SP. At idle its fine but once I get on it, she screams

Start with a used header, maybe get lucky at the wrecker and see the difference (you will feel a difference!). I have tried a variety of mufflers and custom exhaust but racing beat is still #1 for me. All depends on your budget.

You will need a muffler, minimum would be a magnaflow.

The cops would be all over you with no mufflers. Unless maybe your area has cops that don't care about that sort of thing.

Where are some places besides RB that I can get a fairly priced header? With gaskets and such of course!

to be honest, I would assume just a header/straight pipe would sound basically like this, and that wouldn't bother me personally one bit.

More than happy with my custom header and RB 'street port' 81-82 muffler. Sooo quiet for my big port 12A, specially since the header collecter is 4".
I like loud too, don't get me wrong, but on the street it gets annoying.
You have no idea how loud a unmuffled rotary is. Specially one that is heavily ported. It sounds great, but when your ears are bleeding..

I'm going down this route right now, I have straight pipe with stock muffler.... you don't want that route. it makes you think the car is a giant tin can with wheels. nobody will not not notice you driving it around. I just did it because I was curious after reading how bad it was on here to most.

It's all fun and games til someone loses an ear.
That RB sp muffler has a 2 into 1 collector, collected to 2.375"("ID"I believe).
So you cut the collector off? I have read on this forum that setup(collected header, collector cut off muffler) has acceptable sound levels. What does your 4" collector collect into, what size?
I had a collected RB header, RB pre-silencer, 81 stock muffler, too loud for me, and most every one that heard it. I "made" an additional strait through muffler after the RB pre-silencer to make it acceptable.

My rule: if it gives me headaches when I drive it, it's too loud! I do not consider a straight pipe streetable in any way, shape, or form. Even with a stock exhaust manifold. And even if the cops don't care.

As for sources for the header, just stay away from Pacesetter. Racing Beat is good if you do a custom 2.5" collector.

Sorry for any confusion. The header has very short primaries(close to 7"). And the collecter is 4", it then reduces down to 3" and is ran all the way back to the stock connecting pipe where it's reduced down again to 2" so that I can use the stock flange to bolt up to the stock 81-82 connecting pipe. Then it goes to the 'Street Port' Muffler.

^The problem is the stock muffler. The RB muffler is much quieter than the stock muffler.
My 'Street Port' muffler is the only muffler I'm running. I'm not running a presilencer, it's that quiet. It's all a matter of opinion though.

Racing beat's full system is 745 before shipping. I would love to be able to spend roughly 400 on an exhaust system rather than 800+ (shipping)

I drove a car (granted it was a 4banger, not a rotary) for about 4 months with a huge leak right at the end of the header... it really didn't bother me. If I could get the RB header, and then straight pipe to the stock muffler, would that make it a bit more tolerable to innocent bystanders?

in the stock system, the converters actually do most of the silencing, so when you pull these out the stock muffler gets kind of loud and tinny. it is streetable though, it just doesn't sound very good.

oh and a piston car with an exhaust leak < unmuffled rotary. i have numerous examples, but perhaps the best to say that the videos dont convey how loud they are.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qL35...eature=related

the Rx7 is so loud you can't really hear it.

You could street it with a header and stock muffler and no cats, but it would be loud and sound awful.

I think I'll just save my cash and get the full RB system.
