I love the Panasport's but they just cost too much. Here's what I did with my wheels.

The "white grime" you refer to is actually the clearcoat peeling off. Common problem, especially on a northeast car and it's rare to find a set of stock alloys that don't have at least a minimum of this problem. Not really much of anything you can do except media blast and repaint/powdercoat/whatever..

The ones I have, have been re-furbished.

They look great. I don't know how they were done because the origanal owner had them done. But you should talk to the car guys around you. The guy that did mine does it as a side line. This sort of thing is quite common once you get moving in the right circles. Go to car shows and stuff in your area talk to as many pople as you can. You will be amaized at what you find.

Good luck and BTW the clear coat does need to be removed with a sand blaster.

That is correct, I used a paint stripper.

inittab,

That looks great. Did you just strip and paint the inside spokes and mask off the lips, or did you redo the entire wheel?

I have a set of rims without the clear coat coming off... But I couldn't get one of them off my parts car, so I only have three of the good ones on my ride =(

No acid works to take off the clear coat?

Thanks!

I stripped off the clearcoat with paint stripper and polished the lip using polishing compounds. I masked off the lip for painting then clearcoated the entire wheel using polyurethane based wheel clearcoat .

You should be able to find a set of those + wheels in great shape for probably less than it would cost to restore 'em. Hell, they're practically free around here.
Same with waffle wheels. Just my .02.
