TN stock nikki high rpm sputters

I recently got another 1st gen, this time its an s3 fb, its got some cool parts on it. The emissions have been removed, and it idles smooth, but at around 4k rpm it starts to sputter. I have been doing some research and think it is the secondary jets? Also what is manual secondaries? how could i tell if my new car has these? Sorry for all the Q's. I'm just eager to learn.

Learn lots and lots by going to www.sterlingmetalworks.com or hit the search button on the tool bar directly above this post....on the drop down click the "advanced" button and type in Mechanical secondaries have it look in the entire 1st gen section and have it look for more than 10 replies. Should give you enough information to become dangerous!

As far as the above 4k sputter.....just go ahead and replace your fuel filter.....if that does not cure your problem....look into problems with your fuel pump.

Get a Factory Service Manual (FSM) or a Haynes manual....it will be your friend as long as you own a Rotary!

Welcome to the club

I'd bet its either a fuel filter or pump as well. The stock fuel pump is barely enough for the nikki as is. Might want to add a relay too

I forgot to mention, its streetported. I appreciate your input and i will def. research the sterling cite. I will look at the fuel filter, and fuel pump. If its streetported is the stock pump enough? thanks again.

If the above doesn't solve the problem, look into ignition. A dying leading ignitor can cause high-RPM misfires.

Do the FC fuel pumps serve as an upgrade? And if so, do they match up with the fb connector and chassis?

the fc pump is for fuel injection so its going to be to much pressure even if he gets a fuel pressure regulator. he should just get a pump thats for carbs but a good one like a carter .

Not trying to argue here, but I ran a stock pump on my weber. And I'm still running a stock pump on my Modded Nikki that's on my Monster Port.. Runs great.

Possible causes that I can think of:

Vacuum leak
Old fuel filter
Clogged screens under Banjo Bolts on carb
Clogged jets in carb
Tired fuel pump
Hole in pickup tube inside fuel tank
Bad plugs and/or plug wires
Timing issues
Poor grounding of motor
Low voltage
Old dizzy cap/rotor

Other thoughts: If the secondaries weren't opening, I don't think it would pop or sputter. It would just stop accelerating.

Test: Run the car up through the rpms until it begins to sputter. Push in clutch and coast for about 5 seconds. Release clutch and give her the gas again.

Results: Still sputtering? Internal clog, probably jets. Runs better after 5 second rest? Look for fuel delivery issues before the carb.

Hope this helps...

both of these would be my initial advice. however, Kentetsu touched on some of the other points i'd be interested in as well.

what's the history of the carburetor (general maintenance, rebuilds, etc.)? when last did you change the plugs and what plugs are you using? have you noticed any other electrical issues with the car?

The carb looks like a De-emissioned stock nikki. I know the a/c has been pulled. what kentetsu said about the secondaries is so true. It would just die. I have a fuel filter and will replace it(after i find it) I will be looking at my fuel pump also. The car's gas gage doesn't work very well, There are smaller electrical problems. I appreciate everyones input. Could i run seafoam in a rotary? I don't mind cleaning the carb, just interested.

i would say before, run your tank to about a 1/4 left, then put a can of seafoam (or two) in your gas and drive it like you stole it until its about empty, then change the filter, thats what i would do

depends on how bad your filter is, when i run seafoam on my cars, not just my 7, i usually change it after. But if your filter is clogged and really restricting flow, than i'd change it before and after. after since youll probably suck up some **** from your tank.

Changed out the Fuel filter(purolator). I'm currently running seafoam in it. I did the 5 second clutch hold test after sputters, and that didn't eliminate the sputtering(didn't help at all). Its either me or my wishful thinking, but it almost feels like the seafoam might be slowly taking the sputters away?? (spark plugs are new, and so is cap/button) Thanks everyone for helping so much so far(:

the seafoam will clean out your carb somewhat, your car should be smoking a lot with the seafoam. it cleans out carbon in your engine aswell. Im betting you need to rebuild your carb, its not hard to do at all, i had fun doing mine sterling metal works is a great place to go to read up on how to rebuild carbs. thats good that the seafoam is working.

I think i may have diluted it too much. I put one bottle for 6 gallons. How could i make sure the fuel pump isn't going bad?

I enjoy rebuilding carburetors. So if its not fuel delivery problems then i will definitely do that.

you could probably rig up a gauge and put it after your pump, not exactly sure what it should read though, probably around 4 or 5 i would think, maybe someone can chime in who knows the procedure.

I'm not sure what kind of gauge to rig up. I pushed through the sputters a little, but i'm afraid to push it hard.
