stock muffler tips?
stock muffler tips?
Can anyone suggest a good source for aftermarket exhaust tips for an 84 GSL that look like the original stock muffler tips and can be installed on the stock muffler? I've been checking the local auto parts stores but haven't come up with anything. I even bought a pair from Mazda ($20 each!) but had to return them because they didn't come with the mounting hardware (this would have been another $20 each, no way). There must be some good aftermarket ones out there, anybody know where?
Thanks

I don't know what you guys have down there in the US for parts stores, but here in Canada I found a pair of stock looking tips at Canadian tire for like 7 bux a peice. Only problem with them is that the tip was rolled over, not straight like the 7 tips.
Heres a stock muffler tip - get rid of it.
Save up and buy a Racing Beat muffler and be done with it
No need for tips on a muffler youre just gonna junk down the road anyway, then you have tips with no use for them. You could always try Ebay, or the junk yard. I know at Schucks they have a stock tip that looks identical to the RX-7 tip, but as stated, theyre rolled instead of straight cut, but its better looking IMO. I like the rolled tip look a lot, like on the RB muffler. I loved my RB muffler, both the look and the sound - then again, so did the thieves

It's an original muffler on an 84 GSL with 85,000 miles and a recently installed cat that works and sounds great. I have an intact, legal and perfectly functioning exhaust system, why would I want to get rid of it and spend $800 on an RB system? I just need some tips to replace the original ones, which are 20 year old. It shouldn't be more than $15-20, they are just short, fat chrome-coated tubes. If anybody has found something that works, please let me know.

. Youre right, the tips are an easy way to go if you truly dont want to replace the whole unit, and I have seen them in stores. Just keep looking for em

Thanks TJ, now you've got me thinking that an RB muffler might be a good idea. Still, if I could get a pair of inexpensive aftermarket tips that look something like the original, I could put them on in the mean time (I just have a hard time removing something that is still working, when I have so much else to do and especially when it's 20 year old stock, kind of a respect thing, you know?).
Racer X7, where did you get those $20 tips, sounds like what I'm looking for? Autozone has something that might work, but they are angled, maybe if I just take a hack saw to them.
candyass, those magnaflow tips look great and would do the trick, only problem is $66.00 each plus shipping, that's about $150 towards an RB muffler!
Thanks for the suggestions, if anyone finds the perfect stock tips please let me know!

I dont know if you have a "Pep Boys" near you but i am running the stock exhaust still (although the cats are empty) and i was missing the tips. I went into a Pep Boys and they had some really nice stainless steel tips that were not quite round and not quite square. I was at rotorfest with them and i got alot of compliments. The fact that they are not round accents the body real well. I will try to get pics

Ray, Ill stop by the Shucks (I have to get a master cylinder for my Toyota anyway) here in town again and see if they still have em. If so, Ill see if I can snap a pic with my camera phone and post it. If you like em, I can pick em up for you if you can get some money to me. Give me some dimensions youre looking for too, how big of pipe is the stock outlet off the muffler, and how big of a total outside diameter you are looking for?
~T.J.
EDIT: Here, these are 9" long, but you could maybe cut off the straight end a little? Poke around Ebay, there are tons of em.

Thanks RotorMotor, I found some at the local autozone like the one's in your link except they are chrome, only cost me $12 for the pair. They are well made but might be a bit long. I'm going to put them on for awhile, if I don't like the angle I'll get out the hack saw.
At $12 a pair, I expect they will, but if they last a year or two they will have done their job. I'm am concerned that if I cut off the angle part to make them look more original this will promote corrosion around the outer edge that has no chrome plate and shorten their life even more. But it seems to be the best alternative out there, I'll make the cuts this weekend and post the results.
At least you guys have the original muffler style. Someone in my cars past installed a "stock" muffler with only one outlet pipe, and then they stuck on a really long chrome tip that rusted out. I pulled that off and got one at Pep Boys that "Y"s out into two tips, So at least it looks original, until I do the new exhaust.

Hey just wanted to let you know that mazdatrix also sells them :

Thanks dj, yes I did see these but from the cost and the rather crummy photo on the preceding page in their on-line catalogue, it looks like they are reselling the stock Mazda replacements (a lot of their body parts are, which is good). But the stock ones require a special inside bracket to mount them - I learned this after special ordering the parts from Mazda ($40 for the two), only to have to return them when I realized I would have to spend another $30 for the brackets. That's when my aftermarket search got serious. I think the autozone ones are going to work and they will look just like the originals once I get them sawed off - they are actually heavier and better made than the stock parts I got and returned and returned to Mazda, but they only cost $6.00 each. I'll post the photos of the final product in a few days.

Just as a follow up to this post, because there are a few MindTrain
mufflers out there, the JC Whitney parts were a perfect fit. I was
able to cut off the old, badly rusted chrome tips with sheet metal
shears, leaving about an inch of material to slide the new tips onto.
After removing most of the external rust from the small length of old
tips, I slipped the new tips over them and hammered them on snug with
a rubber mallet. Another two minutes with a welder, and I was all
done. (I can't believe how much easier it is to weld exhaust systems
than it is to weld sheet metal!)
The whole job took under an hour -- mostly finding my tools! -- and
was done with the muffler still mounted on the car. I used a lift,
but could have easily done this on my back in a driveway.
Now I have two nice, shiny, 3-inch stainless steel tips sticking out
from under the rear bumper.

Did this job weld stainless steel to steel? Did you use a MIG with 25%
CO2? Did it look ok when you were done? I want to do something
similar to my ugly exhaust that is suppsed to have the original (long
gone) chrome tips screwed on.

Those JC Whitney tips seem to be just the ticket. The muffler side of
the tips have been opened up slightly, so as to create a snug fit on
a 3" pipe -- in other words, they're a 3" outer diameter on the end,
and a 3" inner diameter on the muffler side.. I expect that their
other sizes are similar.
