Stock Jack

Im having the hardest time jacking up my car high enough to pull the tranny out from it. I only have the stock jack and have to jack my car up in rocks. When I try to jack it up it gets really hard to jack up and the car always slides and falls of the jack stand. It makes me very frustrated.

Do any of you guys have some techniques to use with the stock jack?

ugh

My technique is easy

Know someone that has a good floor jack and borrow it.

Stock jack = junk. Only for emergencies. That's why its called EMERGENCY jack. Sorry, but its true.

he's right, it's just dangerous to use the stock jack for anything but changing a tire, you can get a decent floor jack fairly cheap, or i think autozone has a lend-a-tool program. good luck.

My god I couldn't imagine trying to pull the trans out with the stock jack. Get a floor jack and jack stands. I had a floor jack that almost maxed out before I could slide the trans out from under the car.

Safety first the munchken, er Dwarf. The ambulance bill alone will be more than a good floor jack and 4 jack stands, if you survive when the car falls on you.

Another option might be a set of ramps, but I haven't used those since one twisted and collapsed under my Ranchero while driving up on it.

OMG u r crazy!!!!!

i know OSH had a sale for an ALUMINUM hydraulic jack 1/2 ton.. they raise up fast!!!! for 70 bucks with tax included.. they are probably all gone...

get some 3 ton or 2 1/4 ton jack stands for like 15 bucks.. they come in pairs...

tools are an investment! you will always use them over and over. craftsman.. if they break.. bring it to sears and they will give u a new one! yay!!!!

yea you all probably know this but im just a youngin and finally bought my first craftsman 155 pc mechanics tool set and jack stands

I use my stock jack all the time. but it is just to get the car up so that i can put car stands uner the frame. I don't know if it would be high enough to take the trainny out. but who knows. I have a yota with less room.

A good set of ramps is worth their weight in gold.Mine are plastic, with egg crate pattern all the way to the bottom.....each ramp alone is rated for 10,000lbs.....they ROCK!
Ramps serve the purpose of a jackstand and at the same time, delete the need for a jack.Of course,if the car doesnt run,its always good to have a set of stands and a decent floor jack too......

All good advice. But if you choose to ignore it, I hope you're an organ donor. I know some guys at the veterans hospital that would like to know your blood type.

im surprised your ramps are low enough that you can drive up. The nose on my rx hits before the wheels, which sucks because they're so nice to have. What brand do you have steve84GS TII if i don't mind asking

Mariah Mode 1 widebody,1" RB springs.

I start out with the ramps at a 45* so the wheels can get started.Once Im halfway up,I stop and kick the ramps all the way under, inline with the tires.I can do this forward or backwards, depending on where I want the ramps once its all the way up.You just have to remember to do this in reverse when you come down,or it sounds REALLY bad!

I had a stock jack strip out the threads and drop the dar as I raised it. I can get my 7 up on ramps if I add 2x6 boards on the 2nd rung from the bottom. A car ramp for my car ramp....

I throw down a piece of 2 x 6 wood in front of the ramp, roll the front tries up on the wood then onto the ramp and it clears no problem. Without the wood helper I can't do it because the front valance hits the ramp as it starts to go up.

I use a 2x6 block as well. Roll the tires up onto it, then I can get a floor jack under the car.......................................

There really is no substitute for a good floor jack and jack stands, you can't go wrong.

ia gree. just spend the money and invest in a good floor jack and some good stands and you will be fine. The only time i have used my e-jack was when i first got the car because my floor jack would not fit underneath it to raise it. i used it as a preliminary to get the clearance needed to use a real jack.

I always reccommend using a floor jack unless you are stuck on the road with a flat as the e-jack is very flimsy and reliably unstable even on flat ground.....

also can i have your skull if you die? j/k

you can get 3 1/4 ton floor jack for like 25 bucks at advanced and 10 bucks for 2 3ton jackstands.

you're going to need a floor jack to drop the tranny anways won't you?

I know this is gonna seem like a dumb question, but how exactly did you get the trans out when you can't get the car in the air.
