Question Stock intake on 82 12 A

Need Help. I am going through my '82 and have a question about stock intakes. I have attached a photo of my stock '82 manifold and also of an intake I was given along with a Nikki Carb I purchased. My '82 has a butterfly as part of the intake, circled in the photo, the other intake does not have this valve, seems much simpler. I am removing the "rats nest", so my question is can I use the intake without the valve? What is it for? Noticed a difference in the water jacket as well but the bolt pattern is the same. Anyone ran across this? I appreciate any feed back.

I have also picked up a complete dasd from an '84-85 model, anyone ever switched one of these into an '81-83 model? My dash is in rough shape and needs to be replaced. Would like to go back to the '81-'83 style but seems difficult to locate with no cracks. I have an '83 dash but it is also split right above the instrument cluster,
Thanks,

Jeff Morgan

Shutter valve... it stops the little spits of backfiring on deceleration. Ya don't need it if you're removing the rats nest / emissions.

For more info do a search with that term.

Looks like you have a pre-RX-7 intake manifold.

Nope that's very much a '79-'80 RX-7 intake manifold. You can't use it because it lacks the casting to cover the ACV port below the primary ports. You can use it, if you do some things first.

Thanks for all of the information. Is there any problem if I pull the shutter valve out of the '82 intake as long as I plug off the air lines associated with it?

there is a chart in kenichi yammamoto's rotary engine book, shutter valve lowers main cat temp (or stabilizes it) on decel.

the anti backfire valves are elsewhere

I removed mine and plugged the hole left by the valve shaft, using a part of the shaft itself as a plug along with some good ole JB weld to hold it snugly in place.
