Stock 85 SE - 4 port or 6 port?
I've been seaching around for an answer to this question but I'm getting conflicting answers. Some posts are talking about 'stock 85 SE 6 ports 13B' engines...yet other posts say the same but with 4 port 13B engines.
Can someone tell me what configuration the North American 85 SEs came in?
Sorry for the beginner question.

My most favorite 13B is the nitrided J-spec '80-'83 4 port R5. They're about as rare as a Cosmo 13BRE. I streetported one and dropped it into a GLC project. For a rotorhead like me, they are one of the best most upgradeable, yet very excellent in stock form, 4 port 13Bs ever to come out of Japan, if not the best. They exceed any of the old school 13Bs from the '70s without even trying. Too bad they're so rare.

And they came with tall ports.

Now you're just tease'n me...
I've read around here that I can still make something decent out of my humble 6 port without changing the front/end plates. I want to start researching the project but need the answer to the 4/6 port question before I could really begin.

similar situation
I have an 85 SE and the SE with EFI is a 13B 6 port stock. Everybody is throwing out details and specs and all sorts of stuff.
If your going to replace the engine consider this. Use a 4 port 13B out of a 3rd gen. Use a front cover and an oil pan out of a 1st gen. this will fit the 1st gen with a slight modification to the way the engine is mounted. Wjile your at it you might as well have it ported. Spend thefew extra dollars, you'll see the difference. If you plan to turbo charge or supercharge then try to get low compression rotors.
Now, you will have to have an adapter made so the 85 EFI will fit. Take a couple of gaskets, one form each side to a machinist and he can make you one.
I don't know if anybody sells one but if nobody does i will prototype one and start selling them. I can't be the only person who has this setup.
Camdem/atkins, RB and microtech all recommended this setup. So far it's working well for me.

one more thing. If your going to pull the engine you might as well also change the fly wheel to something lighter. The stock fly wheel weighs a ton and is slow to spin up.

The question was
"Can someone tell me what configuration the North American 85 SEs came in?"
I answered that question and gave a suggestion. that's all. lighten up OLD guy.

agreed, it's just a temp solution while i save money for something better is all. It's a starting point. so many options and directions to take. It will get replaced. For now it works. we all go through the "save money" for the next step situation.
But it does place you in a good position to move forward.

Now your making sence, i can understand you now. Explaining rather than insulting somebodies intelligence goes much further in life. but i guess the "finger" says it all.
