Stock 12a air intake question

I have a 79 with stock 12a car has full racing beat exhaust from header to muffler emissions removed and everything blocked off with the mechanical secondaries now my issue is that if i run the car with the stock air filter housing and filter the car bogs when i open the secondaries but if i run it without air filter housing it runs smooth as butter

so if I get the racing beat air filter housing will it solve my issues????

i really dont want to keep running my car without filter

i'd say you have some other sort of problem, but lets say you dont. You mean just taking your canister off? or take your filter out? if it runs good without the canister the racing beat should fix that, but even better i would get the filter kit that RX7.com has, i think it would be better. (i have no experience for i put a weber on my car when i bought it.)
hope this helps...

I ended up putting a RB filter/housing kit on my car so I could have an intake that would clear my ReSpeed strut tower firewall ties. The RB intake really does sound good, it's quite loud at full throttle actually... Kind of Weber IDA-ish sounding when the secondaries kick in.

if i understand right, it runs fine with canister and no filter? if so, buy a new filter.

i've seen the stock canister sides cut out to allow more air all around the element rather than just thru the snorkel. just remove metal in the areas between where the clips that hold the lid on, but not so much that it compromises the rigidity of the canister. seems like i remember some pix on here from way back of this being done. u'd have to remove all the emissions stuff to use one of those aftermarket air cleaners unless u fab up some connections for these hoses. which is quite possible to do with a little imagination and some help from the home depot.

Rob golden (pineapple racing) told me to go around to the cooler side and drill some holes in the top. when under full throttle theres vacuum in the stock carb hat.

I ordered a foam filter from mazdatrix.. once i get the filter i will try to do my own housing..kinda like the RB one since i don't want to spend $80 bucks on that..we'll see. Btw which are the vacuum or holes in the RB housing for the hoses so i can know which ones i need. Thx!

that's exactly what i did i just need a better flowing filter to go with it but i can already notice a difference specially in temperatures.

here's a crappy picture with my cellphone, i know its not perfect, and doesn't look extremely great, but it gets the job done, and best of all its free if you have a spare breather (not needed if you are extra careful) and cutting tools .

did cutting the sides out like that improve performance for you? I did pretty much the same thing and lost a lot of power due to hot air being sucked in from the engine bay, and also hot air from the rad being blown directly onto the filter by my thermofan. Taping up the all the holes and running a small CAI improved things quite a bit.

That said it's quite hot here especially now in summer, maybe somewhere with cooler ambient temps would see a benefit from cutting the sides out?

Looks nice man! i was thinking about doing the same! but to the other guy how come you lost power?? you might forgot to plug in a hose or something, cuz' all the ppl that have removed they blue snorkel using a high flow filter told me they felt gains.

well right now i've felt improvement, and it actually even gets internal temperatures a bit lower, but it is somewhat cold where i'm at. i thought about once summer hits i may have to wrap my headers, which i was going to anyways, but we'll see how it acts this summer i guess. so for now like i said before, i need to get rid of that crappy filter and get a better flowing one.

You will need a larger air-flowing airbox. You are choking the flow when you open the secondaries. I had this happen to me when I had the stock nikki and a CAI, it would run great but horrible studder/stumble the second I opened it up.

Hmmm strange. Must be the temperature difference then.. Plus my rad gets quite hot (still need to fine tune the ewp/ thermostat) so there's a lot of hot air in the bay.
