I didn't see any hoses off, i havnt disconnected the cat yet, i dont think its the problem, when it starts and idles(very weakly) exhaust comes out the back freely. The carb is getting fuel fine. The fuel level never drops on the sight window on the carb when its cranking or idling.

Are you pulling out the choke when you try and start the car? If so, is it staying out by itself?

I have tried both ways, the choke opeartes fine and stays out by itself. The thing is, it will start, but run VERY weakly and idle probably close to 250rpm, then 10-20seconds later it will die, or whenever you touch the gas pedal.

there is one sight glass in the front of the carb, just have to bend a couple wires out of the say to see it good. Looked at it while car was "idling" and the gas level never dropped. I havnt looked for the other sight glass. I'm really clueless on what the problem, the carb is getting fuel, i just dont know what exactly is wrong

are you having the same exact problem? when i use the choke nothing changes, same thing happens, in your post you said it idles too high when choke is on. My car will never ide above 250rpm(guess, too low for the tach to really read)

no mine won't start because with the choke on it will idle at 2,000, i believe thats what everyone said. mine isn't seeming to get any gas. it will only start and run at low rpms. where are the sight glasses at?

My exhaust would belch smoke (from the atf) and looked like it was flowing too...still ended up being the cat.

exhaust comes out the back freely
Not to sound rude or anything, but how do you know? If your not inside the engine trying to get out through a little tube, how do you know that the engine isint working like hell to get what little exhaust is coming out to come out? Basically, all Im saying is that just because there is exhaust coming out doesnt mean that the cat isint bad. I had one do that to me once. Exhaust still came out, but the cat was bad. Think of it like a garden hose, free flowing it doesnt take that much effort to come out, but when you cover up the end a little, water still comes out, but its highly restricted and takes more pressure. Like the cat, it still comes out, but the engine could be working hella hard just to get it out...Seriously man, just unbolt everything behind the header and see if she will run, lots of people have told you that, and you seem to have tried everything else, why not give it a shot? Might as well just take off some bolts and see if that will solve your problem before you "waste" money on a carb rebuild kit and then find out that it wasnt the problem. Unless you plan on doing it anyway... Just my $0.02. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

thanks for all the advice, i just got back from a soccer tournament this weekend, the games today got cancelled since all the rain made the fields into a big puddle. I'll be removing the cat today, i'll post the results.

Disconnected the cat, and it fired right up, revved it up to 3k, too much smoke for my neighborhood though(MMO treatment still needs flushed out) Gonna take it to a big parking lot tonight and run it for a while. I think I'm going to make a straight pipe to replace the cat, no emissions here, would i get pulled over for noise pollution? Exhaust is all stock.

Good job. My car runs a micky-mouse exhaust system, it's fairly loud, but it's not too bad. I don't think taking the cat out will make your exhaust system too much louder. My car runs a stock header/manifold thingy, a straightpipe from that to a presilencer from a 1981 honda Accord, to a stock RX-7 twin tip muffler. It's not too bad, and it sounds ok too.

I towed it out to that parking lot, ran it with only headers I luv the sound of rotary... Waited for the MMO smoke to clear, and drove it home. Also, I gutted the cat, all 3 pices. The main one was completely clogged, and the other two pices had some junk in them. So it will be like having straight pipe back to the muffler. I'm going to get the title transferred(owner signed in the wrong place on the last one) and plates on saturday. I'll be on the street after then

Oh, just to let you know, straight pipe isn't quiet, but it's not horrible. Once I got new gaskets it was pretty tolerable (my muffler may be shot too though, the jury is still out on that one...)

I got to drive it some today its not too loud, has a cool sound to it. The cat on an 85 is a 3 part kind of thing, I gutted all of them So it's basically straight pipe back to the muffler. The muffler pretty new, I think it was replaced in mid 2000. It runs a little hot, needs new radiator hoses and maybe a theromostat or something. Oh well, its still fun as hell to drive

Ok, let me get this straight. You removed the cats and that fixed your problem? What exactly was your car running like prior to this. Would it lug like crazy if you stepped on the gas from idle? Would it vibrate alot? Please let me know, thanks. dynasis@msn.com

Hey 85rx7GS. This car wasnt running (or starting) at all untill we removed the cat. We did a lot of troubleshooting but nothing worked. When we removed the cat it fired right up. Now were putting in a re-cored radiator and I think that will be all it needs. Might be a good running car for under $1100. By the way , it looks exactly like the one in your picture.
